Step in the Arena right through to Moment of Truth

if you have time check out the 1st and last albums too.

How was your Common listening experience btw?

Pretty good. I listened to LWFC twice because I wasn't that big a fan of it the first time around. It really did grow on me the second listen, though.

Gang Starr is a tricky 1 for me. Will need to relisten, but I think they have 3-4 which are at least in contention to be a classic.

no surprise that The Sun Rises in the East is probably better than any Gang Starr album. Jeru was on another level. But honestly speaking, I don't think Premo was consistently great on Step in or Daily Operation, and even elements of Hard to Earn sounded rough. He was more of an individual beat maker but on albums I can only think of two that back to front really SLAP: The Sun Rises and Moment of Truth. And perhaps Return of the Boom Bap as well...that was fire.
Premo has the ability to make below average MCs(Group Home, Big Shug) sound average and average MCs (Guru, Freddie Foxx, Afu-Ra) sound good. Jeru was already a good MC and the result was a classic album from front to back.

Imagine if we had got that Premo produced Nas album they promised us years back :mjcry:

I think 94 onwards we would have been good for classics with Premo but as I said he isn't the best album producer in the same way RZA or Dre are. But ask any producer for a one off beat and chances are Premo will give you the best one.

Premo + Nas = INFERNO

Premo + Rebel INS = END OF THE WORLD

what makes it a classic?

the reason I said potential for 4 is because they all have quality, but what else? what does Hard to Earn bring to the table?

for the record, HTE has more potential for classic than the previous two

To me the production superseded from the previous albums and it was more consistent.

Lyrically it was dope like all the Gang Starr albums. The album banged from top to bottom.

For me it's an easy classic! Also this album had some of their most memorable records in Mass Appeal, DWYCK, Code of the Streets, etc.

that's true...there was even a video on Mass Appeal can't remember the series name I'll link it in a little while

that's the only one that has a chance of changing for me

I see Daily Operation getting love though idk what to think of that one...

Daily Operation is a classic as well to me. It took many listens though.

The production holds up and Guru was lyrically focused. His second best performance on a Gang Starr album after Moment Of Truth.
