A big aspect of whether an album is classic is the impact. The Players EP and Born to Mack had a HUGE impact on the West Coast and the South, even the Midwest. Snoop Dogg's persona is derived from Short, ditto on Pimp C and a gang of other gangsta playa rappers. His influence on the game cannot be understated.
:ohhh:
Were you actually cognizant when the Players EP was released?
Same question for @Taadow
The breh @The_Hillsta already he remembers Short pre Born To Mack :wow:

No, grew up on his music though.

no doubt.

but my FIRST barometer personally is quality. If it doesn't pass that test, I don't wanna look at it. That's why I wanted this list in particular to reward the best of the best albums that bring not only all the 'classic' qualities to the table such as impact/originality/influence/relevance etc., but also quality, which is of most importance to me.

otherwise Das EFX would belong as well, and I don't feel they're as deserving as a Mobb Deep for example

Too Short is a capable rapper. The peak of his music was Life is... Too Short, he's never been a wack rapper though. What he doesn't do with lyricism he does with personality, delivery and charisma. You have to appreciate the aesthetic to "get" the music.

That, and his beats SLAP. If you haven't played his albums (including Born To Mack) in a real system you're not listening to it with the right frame of reference.

Be for real, you've listened to at most 1 Too Short album maybe once all the way through.

sounds about right. I've heard one or two of his albums in full. Semi-recently too. I can't even remember which ones they were (thought I have a sneaking suspicion one of them was Get In Where You Fit In). That's how forgettable the experience was.

I'm taking about his albums, not questioning his quality as a rapper.

I'm not looking for crazy technicality or elite lyricism, so I know what I'm expecting. It's not like Doggystyle was the apex of lyricism itself.

Production is really good for the most part, it does slap as you said. That's why I was addicted and just knocked out 6 albums in a row. But I don't think the album comes together as a project of the highest quality.

I'm considering a change on Life is Too Short. That album along with Get in Where You Fit in were my top 2. I'm gonna listen to them both again.

Ok so hopefully we've cleared up that my reason for no classics for Too Short begins with the fact that the quality isn't enough, but as you said that is subjective so yeah...

yeah the numbers thing seems strange. As I said, sales aren't my concern but I can see how your point relates to bias by EC media.

now see the problem is is that you think that your opinion on quality is law but that's not correct.that's what the problem is just because you think that this album has X amount of quality doesn't mean the rest of the world shares your views and that's why I go to numbers and stuff like that its not because I think numbers means the album is automatically better to me but it mean that shows what really happened when these albums came out you telling me that this has quality or that has quality doesn't mean anything to me because in my mind only built 4 Cuban Linx has weak quality I feel Raekwon is a average at best rapper I only like maybe 6 or seven songs on that project I don't think something like incarcerated scarfaces is some type of great song to me it has a mediocre beat mediocre hook and a mediocre vocal performance on the verses I'm not impressed. now of course you're going to look at me like what you can't be serious but I'm dead serious so that's why I go back to the numbers and see what really happened because like I said quality is subjective people feel how they feel but what happened actually did happen when these records came out.

that is the point of the POLL.

I never said my opinion was LAW. I'm clearly in the minority here based on the polls, so I'm expressing it from my standpoint, I can't speak on behalf of everybody.

So you would vote no for the OB4CL poll? am I understanding that correctly? if so, that's your business, but also expect you might be in the minority, just as I am here.

The difference is OB4CL has cemented itself as a #coliclassic. We'll see the results with Too Short in due time.

What led you to listen to a Short album? How did you pick which ones to listen to?

I was watching a Too Short interview and he was saying something about how Blow The Whistle came to be. Lil Jon wanted to make the song as a 'response' to something Short had made on a previous album.

And given that I'm a Lil B fan (and he's clearly influenced by Short), I thought I might as well check out his shyt in some sorta depth.

@FruitOfTheVale were you the breh that posted this last year?

shyt slap like a mutha

I had no idea that the EPs travelled that far :ohhh:
I grew up on Short too. :wow:
My first memory of Short was I Want To Be Free. First album I heard in full was Get In Where You Fit in.
But you know in the Bay they would play all of Shorts old singles on the radio constantly.

Too Short is by no means a "good" rapper by any conventional measure, but he used wit and social commentary, to draw you in. I can't even explain it. Intangibles. :yeshrug:

Agree completely about listening to his music in the car. If people are listening for the first time on YouTube clips through your phone or laptop, you're not getting it.

Yeah - I couldn't tell you which song it was, but basically half of Born to Mack has that "Blow The Whistle" feel.

I dont expect too short or any west coast artist to get proper respect on this board.

Pac the only artist with 3 classics so far. Cube got 2. Doggystyle got 100% of yes votes. They have their respect.

If anything the Midwest have been fukked over.

Common + Ye + Eminem = 0 classics
