There's a movement to change that, though.

You're better off with public student loans than private student loans. Public student loans, there are programs now where you can pay as little as nothing (don't believe those third party companies that the least you can pay is 5 or 10 bucks a month, you can actually pay nothing as long as you're that destitute). Keep your payments up for 20 years, 25 years, and the remainder -- principle, interest and all -- is forgiven.
