Very real. That was the Nets mascot for the first two seasons after the move to Brooklyn. They even made a comic book and everything for this dude.
Problem is we live in the social media age where people are ready to clown on everything.
Look at the mascots in the NBA. Look at the Heat mascot.

If these mascots debuted today social media would cream them. A lot of the mascots are corny. The Clippers one just gonna catch heat because it debuted during the social media era.
Reminds me when the Pelicans debuted their nickname and people were (shyt still are) going crazy over it when you have teams in the NBA with nicknames like Clippers, Knickerbockers and Thunder. Those nicknames get debuted today and social media would go crazy with the memes because its the cool thing to do as if sports aren't filled with on the surface lame nicknames and mascots.
