I’m not calling Chad a session musician. I’m calling him a musician and producer. Same way Scott Storch is a musician and producer. He’s not an artist tho. Someone like Timbalajd is an artist. He actually dropped albums, writes, does features etc etc. Just Blaze is a producer. He’s not an artist. Pete Rock is an artist/producer, DJ Quik is an artist/producer, DJ Premier is someone u would consider just a producer. RZA is an artist/producer. Havoc is an artist/producer. The list goes on fam. There’s a distinction. Babyface is an artist/producer. Teddy Riley is an artist/producer. Matter fact Pharrell was and Hugo was mentored by Teddy Riley.

Why isn't DJ Premier an artist.

Cause DJ Premier is a producer. He doesn’t make songs for himself. He produces for others. Which is fine.

I disagree. Releasing songs/albums for yourself is not what defines an artist. An artist is defined by creating art (music). I don't see how anyone can argue Premo doesn't create music when he's composing music and stitching tracks together. I also don't think it's a coincidence that many of the greatest producers also played and/or wrote music. Whether it's Quincy Jones or Teo Macero or Dre etc etc.

I agree in theory but not in practice.

Let's put it like this. If Nas drops a single tomorrow are you going to judge it on it's own merits or compare it to "It Ain't Hard To Tell" and "Nas Is Like"?

Should a new Rae song be compared to "Glaciers Of Ice"? Should a new Jay song be compared to "D'Evils"?

You get what I'm saying?

As long as the new song is dope that's good enough for me. I never remotely expected this sh*t to be "Grindin' 2" so it not being on that level was never a factor.

Fred.
I guess? What I said was less about me comparing it to previous songs and more that it just sounds like an album cut to me. Every joint you mentioned still has a single vibe to me.

Again I like the new song fine. It’s dope. I still think it sounds more like a b-side to a single instead of the single. It’s all good though

But…Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis are artists lol. They were in The Time and wrote some songs with Prince and Morris Day. Physical Graffiti was basically their album idea and Prince came in and said “ok this is mine now.”
:dead:

I think you’re trying to say Chad and others who play instruments but (allegedly) don’t write songs are session musicians instead of artists. I don’t believe that to be the case. Certainly not for people who contribute to the creative process and help craft/write songs. If you want to say Pharrell was the more prolific writer I’d agree with you, But they’re both artists capable of doing many of the same things, and have directly written multiple bridges and hooks and breakdowns.
Grafitti Bridge

Jimmy and Terry did the bulk of the Time's Pandemonium album as well

Ur playing semantics. Should I say recording artist to dead this whole shyt? DJ Premier isn’t a recording artist. He produces music. Which is an art. But he isn’t a recording artist. He isn’t a solo artist. He isn’t known for shyt outside of his production. He’s a true producer and beat maker. Not a hybrid like those other guys I named.
