HAMDEN, Connecticut — An 88-point victory in a high school girls basketball game did not earn the winning team’s coach praise ... it got him suspended.

Sacred Heart Academy officials suspended coach Jason Kirck for one game after 92-4 demolition of Lyman Hall-Wallingford on Monday, the Hartford Courant reports. In addition, school president Sister Sheila O’Neill apologized for the lopsided score.

“Sacred Heart Academy values the lessons taught and cultivated through athletic participation including ethical and responsible behavior, leadership and strength of character and respect for one’s opponents,” O’Neill said in a statement, according to NBC Connecticut. “[Monday’s] girls basketball game vs. Lyman Hall High School does not align with our values or philosophies. Sacred Heart Academy Administration and Athletics are deeply remorseful for the manner through the outcome of the game was achieved.”

The Courant reports Sacred Heart is 3-0 on the season and considered one of the best teams in the state. It led, 80-0, after three quarters vs. Lyman Hall-Wallingford (0-5). Sacred Heart pulled its starters in the fourth quarter.

Lyman Hall coach Tom Lipka tells the Courant that Sacred Heart “showed no mercy,” saying it used a full-court press most of the first half, then still used fast breaks on offense throughout the game despite its enormous lead.

Kirck has declined to comment, according to multiple reports.

Al Carbone, commissioner of the Southern Connecticut Conference in which both schools belong, said it’s hoped the incident can be used as a chance learn about sportsmanship.

“Obviously, what we’ve seen over the last couple days, I think people know something bad happened,” Carbone tells NBC Connecticut. “You try to move from it, but you also try to use it as an educational experience and moment.”

:pachaha:@ the losing coach being salty.

scust at people thinking showing mercy in sports is actually a good lesson to teach people. it literally the opposite, you are teaching people to be underachievers.
Ya'll ever notice that like 90% of NBA players refuse to let kids win against them even in fun, they never go easy on anyone, they do that because that foot on the gas at all times mentality is what separates them from the rest and the reason why they made it that level in the first place. You should never apologize for a blowout. If anything the other team should apologize for not taking the game seriously enough to compete. if your team is that much better than everyone else you should be looking to upgrade to a tougher division, not punish your coach for winning by too much.

last night, I saw the bulls beat the pistons by 46 points in an NBA game.

I LOVE seeing the score get run up. that type of embarrassment should serve as motivation to the losers to practice harder and level up. and for management to acquire and develop more talent.

Yep, it is a valuable lesson to loser too, not some immoral action.

The fact that they don’t even do this in academics makes this shyt even more ridiculous. Imagine an English professor getting suspended because his debate team destroyed another school and he told them not to let up, and they won in an overwhelmingly lopsided victory. Sounds stupid right?
