This is nothing new, actually.

American companies have been running buckwild in Latin America for the better part of a century. The United Fruit Company--or as the CIA called them, UNIFRUIT--was a major player in this regard.

Yep.... big american business has been fukking around down there since the 1800s

Most of these kinds of moves are for privatization of local water rights/rights of way for corporate use. Coca Cola, Chiquita, Monsanto, Nestle, the list is a long one all around the globe. There's also a lot of state/corporate overlap through the years, with military coups sprinkled in liberally for spice.

These major companies have been acting like countries for the longest time now. Is there even anything that could be done to stop them? Because I honestly don't know if anything can be done.

Countries need stricter laws and need to regulate them more. But then people get bribed all the time.
