The biggest myth about AEW is that it's Cody's brainchild that he brought to the Bucks, Kenny, and TK.
@THEREALBRAND and
@jwinfield have the correct story.
TK was always going to put together some type of wrestling promotion. He was talking to Kevin Reilly (CCO of WarnerMedia and President of TNT and TBS when AEW was being developed) in early-mid 2018, pre-All In, about putting together a wrestling promotion. Hell, Jim Ross talks about meeting TK and having him soft-pitch the concept of a wrestling company to him while he was working for NJPW in his second book. Add in the story from the Bucks's book, and it's honestly astonishing how Cody's gotten fans to believe his line of bullshyt about AEW being his baby. Couldn't be further from the truth in some respects.
With all that said, dude was an integral part of the promotion both in front of and behind the camera, and was especially valuable to AEW during its early days when he still had that babyface connection with the fans. Which is why this is so baffling to everyone: Cody had everything a wrestler could ask for in that he was a top level player in the ring that also had a secure office position, probably for life if he really wanted it, not to mention an entire wing of the company to himself (also: making AEW Community Outreach use your Twitter handle so that when someone interacts with them or they do something good, one of the first things you see is "Cody Rhodes"? What a fukking carny...). But as with many things concerning Cody, his own ego got in the way of him recognizing what Kenny and the Bucks probably recognize about how
rare positions like theirs are for wrestlers period, especially wrestlers under 40 (more than likely because those three had to grind hard for what they had even before AEW started. The Bucks in particular were a business unto themselves years before AEW was a thing). It makes no sense to just give that up because you can't book, especially when you're probably never going to get that position back even if you return to AEW.
And it's not like TK didn't try to make Cody happy. He basically gave him an entire wing of the show to himself for a year and a half, where Cody went on to prove that he didn't deserve to have the book by completely ruining what made him so valuable to AEW in the first place. In that time frame, literally no one he worked with ended a feud with him in a better place that where they began. No one...not Penta, not Ogogo, not Malakai Black, not Andrade, not Sammy, nobody period. At best, that ended up in the same spot. And given that the one avenue to refresh his character was closed off because he loved his community outreach work so much and didn't want to turn heel (to the point that he stated that he couldn't job to anyone who wouldn't do community outreach work during an interview), TK was kind of handcuffed in how he could handle Cody's character. When Cody comes to you after you bent over backwards so hard, even to the point of actively not activating his option and renegotiating his contract in good faith, and asks for things he hasn't at all earned in front of or behind the camera, what would you do in TK's position?
Don't even want to talk about Brandi's position in all of this. She might be a worse cancer than Stephanie McMahon, which is really saying something. Stephanie could at least work a little bit every so often. I'd bet good money these negotiations went immediately south after she made a hash of that segment she did with Dan Lambert and Paige VanZant (not to mention that the very fukking idea of Brandi getting PVZ's first match is ridiculous. I kinda hate Britt Baker these days, but at least she's a ratings draw, a regularly featured player in the division, and can work a little bit).
This all really seems to come down to Cody and Brandi being massive marks for themselves and overplaying their hands badly. I'm taking all reports of Cody going to WWE with a grain of salt until he shows up on their TV, but I can't imagine a dumber and more ass-backwards decision for him to make. Yeah, he might get more money, but that's it. Vince does not like to be shown up, and now he has Cody working for him again? He's never been someone Vince ever wanted to push, so he might be treated like a somebody for a few months, but he'll be right back to his midcard slot soon enough. So Cody will be well-paid, but unhappy with no means of influencing his situation. Hope he's happy with that.
