Labels give artist a ton of money to make music and live on (an advance) The label takes all proceeds of the album sales until the advance is recouped.
once the advance is recouped the artist and the label split the sales proceeds (84% for the label and 16% for the artist) is the standard
Durk just said he got 40 million from the label. He’s not a slave to label, it’s the labels job to sell enough of his music to get their money back. He doesn’t owe them a thing
