The theory uses the analogy of a dark forest, where each civilization is a hunter, and the other hunters are potential threats. To survive, these hunters must remain silent and unseen, fearing that revealing their presence will lead to their demise.

It's kind of a solution to the Fermi paradox .

The idea is fundamentally flawed if we are talking about technological civilizations. You would have to develop the means of advertising yourself in the cosmos before getting the ability to ponder if life beyond your home planet is possible. By the time behavior was changed by the hiding civilization , their messages would forever be in the cosmos and extremely easy to triangulate to their hone planet.

By this i mean, think of things like radio waves from the first comercial radios in the 1910s or the first video signals in the 50s. All these things occured before we sent our first man to space or sent rovers to explore the solar system. Some of our space tech is impossible to send into space at all without radio or IR waves to control them.

So every single civilization would have already transmitted data that would be a dead give away that they exist before they could meaningfully interact with space. So it would be impossible to hide. Our oldest radio messages from earth are already 100 lightyears away from us and move in a predictable direction away fron earth. Using earth as an example, we would be no better than ostriches with our heads in the ground if we tried to hide.

Logically speaking, technological civs would reason that its better for survival odds if their civilization does not hide after their first radio signals are sent into the heavens . Its wiser to rapidly and aggressively build up your space infrastructure for defence, once you realize that alien civilizations exist and may be a threat to you.

You would use the time it takes to cross the cosmos in order to rapidly develop yourself , while your space opponents are wasting time in transit. The best way to not be intergalactic food is to bulk up. Not to hide in your shadow. The small civs get picked off first.

Any alien with the ability to visit another planet has the ability to get resources from another planet. The universe is huge, no need to be threatened by anyone.

If alien civilizations were consuming whole planets we'd see the evidence.

Also, they would be going to equivalents of planets like Mars / Neptune / Pluto / one of Jupiter's moons / various asteroids.

They wouldn't be bothering to come to planets with life. I could also see them having an ethical belief in not stripping resources from planets in planetary systems that already have life as those groups may need those resources in the future. They'd go to planetary systems that didn't have life. Lastly, they probably would barely need to use those types of resources.

I agree, that technical civs have no need to come for raw materials, so there would be no need to mine earth for minerals or steal water. Even moreso once they have fusion and can create whatever element they need from scratch.

But i still think there are strong reasons for them to steal from and threaten humans.
that they would come specifically for earth things like humans, plants, animals, microbes , etc. because you cant get any of these in another solar system because they developed to survive the unique environment of earth. imagine if your cat or the slugs in your backyard are the cure to alien herpes
:pachaha:

Culture is also incredibly unique to each planet so id assume the alien equivalent of philosophers and anthropologists would love to kidnap a few of our bright minds and our idiots alike.

Also in a cultural lens, @High Art is right that our media is extremely problematic for the anti-alien propaganda we send into space. But i differ from him because i think our antialien media would force aliens to come to earth , instead of running away. I say this because among modern earth societies, advanced countries will often go to less advanced places to "civilize" the locals for intolerant beliefs. Im sure space SJWs eixst too :mjlol:

Damn, that channel has been on hiatus for almost a year :ehh:

GOAT channel for ASOIF content but he's touched on other SCI-FI series - Dune, the Expanse, Raised by Wolves, Watchmen. His Euron video and what's beyond Westeros had me wanting to get a Lovecraftian adaptation of the series. What happened in Asshai, George :picard:

But what if they advanced to a point where everyone lives forever? Then they'd realize at some point resources would start becoming limited in the Galaxy even if millions of years away. If habital planets are rare and terra forming is too difficult, I think the fight would be over planets and they would try to protect each unique environment. Unless they can't live on those planets due to biology.
