Nipsey I knew of for years before he died but he wasn't one of the superstar movers in hip hop.

And that's fine.

I'm sure if you'd asked him, he'd have said the same thing but been fine with it since he prioritized ownership over acclaim.

He wasn't no Mac Dre kinda local artist at all but he wasn't That Guy in hip hop.

I will say Victory Lap was getting him more attention than anything else he'd done and this was well before he died so it was his breakout album.

Wasn't a myth, I was a fan since 09 but Nip was a C list celebrity at best. Real hip hop fans that weren't oldheads knew of him, and westcoasters knew of him, but not all listened to him.

Very widely known in the industry as you posted though. Hell the song that introduced me to him was a drake collab called killer and it was big on xm radio circles.

How come other dead rappers funerals didn't fill up Laker arena?
A guy without impact in the game and culture when he was alive could not do that.

Nothing is logically shaking out here in coli land where y'all think nobody in America eats french fries and no men date women with children...

The problem with this argument (regardless of which side you're on) is that it is completely subjective and isn't or can't be quantified properly with an agreed upon rubric to base the argument.

How do you define "known"? Is it tied specific metrics or career accomplishments or is it based on individual viewpoint, feelings, personal impact, etc.?

One thing is certain: Nipsey became a much more popular artist based on streams, catalog value, social media mentions, and conventional media awareness after he died than when he was alive. That is statistically factual.

Whether he was "known" or not is subjective.
Weather he gained more notice after death is irrelevant to if he was actually known an death.

Who can be both well known before death and get increase in music sales after death. Heard of this guy name 2 Pac? Sold very well when he was alive, sold even more when he died. Smh

Weird ass thread, you doing too much. A Grammy nomination (and even win) is a silly way to gauge popularity. Do you know who Esperanza Spaulding is? Jon Batiste? Foreign Exchange? All amazing artists in their own right but c’mon.

I was vaguely familiar with Nip because of features but didn’t get into his discog until after his death. Marathon is fantastic btw, I actually prefer his earlier work.

So are you really saying that Nip had a similar level of popularity to....Tupac?

A mods like @MikelArteta can yall bush this thread? These guys are out of their mind in denial of Nipsey impact.

They don't deserve this thread even with photos of proof

Same. I heard him on killers and then a free style off a “how fly” song.

Then check his tape which add fire

After that got more into him when he was doing songs with Ross and mmg
