Outside of Cali the average person did not know who Nipsey Hussle was until he got with Lauren. I thought he was a generic Cali rapper when he got with Lauren because I nor anyone else I know knew who he was at first. I'm 22 so I can speak for "GenZ" as far as that's concerned. Not saying he had fans of course he did but casual rap fans did not know who he was, especially outside of Cali., I can't speak for older people but younger people were def not checking for him like that at all.

Who you telling? "Strapped" is one of my personal favorite hip hop songs of all time. I been on Nipsey from day 1. He wasn't getting spins like that homie. He was known more for his interviews and who he dated than his music-- that's a fact. His albums sales correlate with that.

Pac was an A List rapper when he died. Nipsey was, at best, a C or D List rapper. That’s the difference.

He was known more on the West Coast and real Hip Hop heads from all over knew of him but the average HIp Hop fan(one who only listens to commercial Hip Hop)didn't know who he was until he was killed. Nipsey I knew of for years before he died but he wasn't one of the superstar movers in hip hop.

And that's fine.

I'm sure if you'd asked him, he'd have said the same thing but been fine with it since he prioritized ownership over acclaim.

He wasn't no Mac Dre kinda local artist at all but he wasn't That Guy in hip hop.

I will say Victory Lap was getting him more attention than anything else he'd done and this was well before he died so it was his breakout album.
