Hip-hop culture is worldwide and crosses racial lines in America. Been this way since the mid-1990s for better or worse
15 year old fans of popular music are going to be ignorant of the wider social implications of mass incarceration
You can't remove music completely from its social context but you also can't pretend like music is ONLY the sum of its social context. There's something that's universally intrinsic about music and human beings that makes it enjoyable for everyone regardless of invented social constructs like race. You don't have to fully understand the social context to enjoy it, and a value judgement on the validity of whether someone should or should not enjoy it is pointless. People are going to interact with music how they decide to when it is made available to them
Stuff like this is inevitable. It's stupid, but what's the use of being mad about it particularly besides it being just another (assumed) manifestation of the disconnect between whiteness and acknowledgement of the lived realities of POC.. There's much more concrete manifestations of white privilege that directly serve to oppress black people that deserve attention
