I live in Connecticut right now and have been living here since I was 6 years old (I'm now 24). I work two full time jobs, one in a hospital as an RN and another with an output infusion therapy company. I don't have much free time outside of work because whenever I'm not working at the hospital, I'm on call for my IV nursing job. I make pretty good money here in CT, even though I do get taxed a considerable amount because I am single and have no dependents. A good reason for this is because of my second job which puts me well over the 6 figure mark.

The reason I'm working so much is not because I spend a lot of money but because I'm paying off my student loans while also saving up for grad school. I don't want my parents to have to pay for a single cent on me ever again. What I want to go to grad school for is still undecided - if I want to go to nurse anesthesia school, it is a 2-2.5 year program which requires you to take classes full time and is nearly impossible to work a part time job during. And if I want to go to nurse practitioner school, it would take 3 years full time (in which I could work part time because the curriculum is lighter compared to anesthesia school) or 4 years part time, in which case I would obviously work full time.

My dilemma starts with me being unhappy here in CT. Most of my friends are in NYC, LA, or Florida, and I can't help but feel like I'm missing out on some experiences that an early 20s kid should experience. For example, living in the city with your boys or going out on weekends and meeting new people, etc. There's really nothing to do here in CT, and I just feel like my "wings" of growth can't open here anymore. I have an opportunity to move out after my lease runs up around August of next year to move out to either Florida or NY. If I were to move out, I would have to give up my infusion therapy job which I must note is a low stress (although schedule-consuming) high paying job, and learn how to budget much better. Moving out would also take away the option of going to nurse anesthesia school because such a program would require me to give up working completely so I would basically be stuck with no ideal way of paying off my living expenses while I'm in school.

The plan if I were to go to nurse anesthesia school would be to move back home to my parents' house, which is in CT, and just get the 2.5 years of school out of the way and then finally move out of the state. But I would be around 27-28 years old by then and am concerned that I would have wasted through my early 20s without experiencing much except working and school. The positives of nurse anesthesia though is obviously the much bigger salary once I graduate and also a pretty flexible schedule too. And living home during the program would guarantee me little to no graduate school loans to worry about. Nurse practitioners also make a decent amount of money but not really close to anesthetists.

So Coli, what advice would you give me / what do you think I should do? Stick through this "blah" phase of my life so I could come out 3 years from now after nurse anesthesia school and start living my life then? Or should I start living my life now, move to a major city, work full time, go to school part time (for an occupation with less pay), and just learn to budget a lot better?

Having "fun" in your 20s is overrated. Nobody does that anymore...20s is like a period of time where you work your ass off so you won't be miserable at 40...

Plenty of people, go have fun in their 20s and be miserable approaching the 28 mark because they realized they didn't do shyt...like other people doing shyt...so they are watching all their friends on facebook getting houses and shyt...and they still living with their parents...since their 20s were nothing but a blur...

The smart thing to do is quit your job, go to nursing school, come out of that, move to cheap fun city, like ATL or Houston, and work one job and then go out more...learn how to budget...

Then enjoy your 30s and 40s...coasting on 6 figures...

Tough decision :jbhmm:

If you feel you're going to regret it if you don't move then do it. Either you want to take a risk or be safe :manny: :hula:

Come to cali breh. As a fellow RN the pay is great. Just try to live outside the city because prices in the LA area are expensive. Plus living in the city is overated. Traffic isnt as bad as NYC so living in surrounding areas such as west covina is better. U get good price on living expenses and u only a 20 min drive from the city.

And you are fukking up by not having your parents pay for shyt...

They brought you into this world...you saddled...yourself with debt...you working for 2 jobs...

I'll be damned if they ain't paying for shyt...
My parents went through hell to have me and my 3 siblings go to college with a relatively good amount of student loans to pay off (a lot of my colleagues at work have it much worse). I actually spoiled them this past year, had their kitchen renovated and bought them a fukking brand new porch / deck. My parents did what they could to make sure me and my siblings had what we needed growing up and I was the most spoiled one (even though that didn't mean much). I don't wanna ask them for any loans or anything just to go back to grad school.

Life is about balance and moderation... fukk what anybody else is telling you. You're only young and in your 20s once. Shared fun experiences, memories and building yourself socially with your peers while making some money >>> being a paid slave that grows old, lonely and miserable but has a lil money that you'll trick off tryin to do shyt you should've done while you were younger

At least go live with them...

You gonna work yourself to death with little to show for it...with all your money going to your debt...

Two jobs suck. Paying off debts suck. Living in a blood sucking state sucks.

Honestly the only choice that you have is to go grad school...so you can improve your quality of life...and get a high paying job in a cheaper state. Then budget yourself so you can pay those loans. So at least by 40 that money can be going mostly to you.

I got lucky and had scholarships and grants, so I don't even have debt.
