didn't know that they really pay for everything..

so what is Venue providing? just the space? do artist rent the space and take all ticket sales..is there a split? or does venue pay artist up front and take all ticket/merch/food liquor sales?

shyts interesting

They do make what they say but they ain’t bringing that total home after paying for everything. Out of that 50k. That artist brings home around 25-30k

Venues don't have anything to do with it. Venues are rented out by concert/ festival promoters/companies. The promoters make money off ticket sales and depending on how much "juice" they got can get a split of the food/liquor sales from the venue as well. The promoters/ festival companies book the artist and pay whatever the fee the artist charges.

Artist provide the promoters a rider before booking which dictates the terms of their booking. Everything in the rider is separate and on top of the booking fee. So in this case its 50K + the rider. Sometimes riders can include flight and hotel arrangement requirements. They also include what type of equipment is needed for the stage and any technical requirements for the performance. This is often where artist get over on promoters cause there is no real limit as to what they can ask for other than what they feel they can get away with asking for. So an artist in their rider could ask for armed security during the event or limo service while they are in town so they don't have to pay for it themselves. Most promoters would eat that cost too cause those are standard ask.

They wont clear that. Mgmt and agents take the biggest chunk. And they take from gross (50K). So even if you are left with 30K after the manager, road manager, and agents get their fees you still pay/owe taxes on 50K gross. So deduct another 15K for taxes and you are left with just 15K for the artist. This is how a lot of artist get into tax trouble and owing millions to uncle sam.

So the net will be around 15k but taxes is taking from gross? So the artist will basically end up with nothing. How do artists make money off music?

As far as uncle sam is concerned the artist made 50k. who you had to split that with(mangers/ agents) isnt their concern. But 15K net aint bad for a days work. The problem is these artist will blow all 30K and forget they owe 15k in tax until its too late.

I got a question about sound and lighting at venues is that something the artist has to pay for if they booked the tour ? I’m not talking about if the promoter reached out to them

Who ever is putting on the event pays for the sound and lighting. Artist dont normally finance their own tours but if they did they would be responsible. The artist and their tour manager will specify the minimum technical requirements. If its a concert venue then often they already have all that onsite. For an outdoor festival or something you would have to rent that from outside companies.

Not if they're in a 360.

Labels get bread off the merchandise too, if the artist hasn't recouped. So you could sell $75,000 in merch, but if you still owe the label $200K, you won't see a dime. Most artists are in this type of situation today, unless they're 100% indie. They're not seeing anything after an advance, until the label is made whole from what they've doled out.

Iv just added couple things that Artists pay for such as dj,photographer, security which would be left with 16,150 then gotta pay taxes on that :damn:

Naw the artist is only paying taxes on the gross (50k), 15K is 30% and the rest is after taxes. His point is that they're not making out individual checks out to the manager and etc, it's made out to the artist who then takes on the tax burden. There are ways to write off some of those taxes (you're basically an employer in that scenario) but most artists are not savvy to those sort of things when they first get to that level.

But yeah to your point, managers and agents take an arbitrary 10-15% which is irrespective of the required budget for the show. The artist is basically only making enough to put on the show, not to bank off of it. That's why shyt like merch is crucial to turning a profit.
