My daughter is having her 5th birthday soon. I was going to tell people to donate to the 529 instead of getting her gifts. Do you think that's too forward?

I read about this idea in a magazine and I wanted to try it out.

While I do think its important to save for college. I don't think kids should have to sacrifice birthday gifts in order to do so. They get one birthday a year, they should be able to get gifts and enjoy it. As the parent you should be able to find a way to allow them to enjoy their birthdays and find a way to save for college.

A day is what you make it. Every day can be a birthday. None of these traditions are Biblical so really, does it matter.

Start the 529 in 8th grade. By then you will know if your kid is actually motivated/interested in pursuing college breh. BUT since your name is "Rawtid" I take you for an islander like myself and we value education highly as parents, so I think she will be in college regardless.

I'd do the 5 year accelerated payments.... 8th - 12th grade. That's what Im doing and thankfully my eldest son lining up his scholarships too. My kids are 5 years apart so when Im done with 1, Ill start paying on other son.

I agree, College money doesn't equal birthday gifts tho....

Great parenting move on your part. The money spent on toys that she will tire of now goes to her education that shall help her become a college educated woman :obama:

My kid is going to college. That's not really an option, that's why I'm starting early.
