Nah, its a good idea but she is 5. She wants toys, books, and stuff like that...

And I would feel a certain kind of way if one of my fam said they would rather me give money to their kids college fund than gettting them a toy. I mean they only gonna be that age once

We got a nice savings account for my 2 year old. and we throw a lil bit in there each month and if she gets to the age where she would rather us put money in there than recieve gifts we will.

We were about to get the 529 until we found out that if they don't go to college they can't touch that money until they 28

My parents didn't have alot of money saved but my Mom was a teacher and made sure both me and my sister recieved scholarships even thought we weren't straight A students. I plan on doing the same for mines..

Maybe your kids LOL!

No. At 5 kids are still learning how to use their hands effectively. They are still learning critical thinking and descision making skills. They are still learning about cause and effect relationships, and how things react to one another. They are still learning about their own emotions, and their likes/dislikes.

Sitting down and talking to them or reading them a book will teach them none of this. They only learn this through expierince and interacting with the world, and a big part of their world is the toys they play with.

Also I should clear up that the option for people to buy gifts will still be there but the option to donate to the 529 will be there as well. People can do what they are comfortable with. I think the 529 donation is a substitute for the gift card.

I agree with part of this but every toy isn't educational and I rarely see people give educational toys as gifts. I don't see what's wrong with swapping traditional gift giving with college savings donations. I think it's easier to drive people to give to a 529 than limit them to what types of gifts to buy.

It's not just about educational toys. Any toy can teach about responsibilty, hand eye coordination, emotions, likes/dislikes, interactions, ect. Kids can learn how to put their own clothes on, or how to do buttons zippers, ect, by playing with dolls. Legos teach spacial awareness and planning. The list goes on, play time is VERY important to young kids development.

My wife is an occupational therapist and she basically plays with kids for a living.
