I want to get into taking sports photos. I'm just starting out and I want to know if a 55-200mm lens will be a good camera lens to start with?

There is a thread on here of coli member pictures as well can someone up that?

What type of sports and what's your budget? Also, what body are you shooting with?

I missed the sports detail. That changes things. A 55-200mm would be decent to start with for sports shots. I thought you were talking about just starting out in general.

It looks like Sigma makes a 70-300 for your camera that falls well within your budget. I'd double check that everything is compatible first though as I'm not familiar with sony bodies.

A300 DSLR

No not yet I want to make sure that's what I want.

Here's a review of the one I linked with some good info.

Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG Macro APO Review

It looks like sony makes a comparable lens and while it has less distortion, the Sigma controls chromatic aberration better. I'd rather fix distortion in post than CA, personally. I'd say go with the sigma and use the money saved to get a decent flash.
