It was a smart incentive laden contract. I know the 49ers might have reservations about how he would do if when the read option played out in the NFL. I know I did. :jawalrus:

Guaranteed contracts wouldn't work in the nfl because of the injuries. There would be no long term contracts.
This is nonsense.. They are printing money with the league..All guaranteed contracts would mean is Robert Kraft's son would only get a 150 foot yacht instead of a 280 foot one...

Ownership and management get paid for physically doing nothing, why can't labor?

Can you imagine if Oakland had to honor that contract they give to Jamarcus?

Colin Kaepernick is not going to get all of his $126 million contract. After leading the San Francisco 49ers to consecutive NFC championship games and one Super Bowl, Colin Kaepernick was rewarded with a "record" seven-year, $126 million contract.

But after Kaepernick's nightmare season we are already seeing that the contract is not nearly as big as everybody made it out to be, and he could receive as little as $25.9 million.

The contract, signed last summer, gave Kaepernick a $12.3 million signing bonus and a 2014 salary of just $645,000.

Kaepernick was supposed to get his first large salary ($12.4 million) in the 2015 season. But because of the way the contract was worded, that salary is actually going to go down to $10.4 million.

Starting next season, Kaepernick's salary goes down $2 million each year if he is not named first- or second-team All-Pro, or if the 49ers don't play in the Super Bowl the previous season with 80% of the snaps taken by Kaepernick, according to Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com.

The 49ers have been eliminated from playoff contention, and Kaepernick ranks 22nd in quarterback rating, which means the de-escalator is going to kick in.

In addition, while many outlets were reporting that Kaepernick's deal included a record $61 million in "guaranteed" money, it turns out the money was guaranteed only for injury. Each year of the contract, the 49ers can decide to cut Kaepernick before April 1 and will not owe him any more money.

Colin Kaepernick's guaranteed money is guaranteed only if he gets hurt.

Kaepernick is almost certainly going to be the 49ers' quarterback in 2015. But if he has another disastrous season next year, the 49ers could potentially cut him before the 2016 season. All of a sudden, Kaepernick's deal would be for just two years and worth $25.9 million.

That's not bad. But it is a far cry from seven years and $126 million with $61 million guaranteed.

He's good but is surrounded by a team and coaching staff that isn't "connecting the dots".

When I read posts about Kaep here...it's clear as day to see that folk are either dumb or just don't watch the 9ers play. Kaep's issues lead all the way to the coaching staff. Everything. From the line being complete turd to the running game falling off to Kaep looking like poop half the season leads to the ineptitude of the coaching staff and the feuding that leaked over onto the field. That is one hell of a contract for the 9ers and it's Kaep who got screwed, really.

I'm surprised Kaep signed that deal to be honest, but as a 9er fan, I'm all for cheap deals that allow us to cut bait if shyt hits the fan.

Yes..They would still be an EXTREMELY profitable business model..

So don't say they "can't" just say they "don't want to"..Which is fair especially if they get the dumb azz union to go along with it..You're only worth what you demand at the end of the day..

But The Raiders are worth $970 million dollars conservatively estimating and haven't made the playoffs in over a decade.. If the Angels can pay Albert Pujols $240 million gaurunteed and still be a top 10 profitable team in the MLB, Jamarcus Russell's measly 61 million dollar deal (which is a 4th of what Pujols makes) wouldn't change the owners menu from filet mignon to sirloin...

The thing that changes everything is the salary cap.. And thats by design..It's not to protect the fans or give them a better product.. It's there to help line the billionaires pockets even further..I can argue that the cap actually makes the quality of the game and the fan experience even worse...

So again.. Why is this the GOAT system for sports contracts?

salary cap is needed to keep balance, or else ny and la team would dominate yearly

but the contracts needs to get better man, kaep signed his contract to fast, he should have fought harder, they wouldnt have let him go, and if they did he would have had somebody ready to give him a 100 mill

I disagree, too many teams makes huge profits for that to happen. Only teams who have trouble are Oakland, San Deigo, and St. Louis.
