This is why the Bible goes so hard on 'the rich'... Because they have so much and yet they are never satisfied and want so much more to the extent that the rest of the world is in poverty.
This is much more than 'get a useful degree dude'. If everyone got a STEM, IT, accounting, finance, law degree, then the compensation in those fields would plummet due to their being a ton of candidates competing for a smaller pool of jobs. One of the huge affects of globalization and the proliferation of technology will be downwards pressure on many jobs due to the ability to very quickly move jobs to low cost labor pools.

Because of the nature of my job, I am at different Tech and Pharma/Biotech Campuses all the time. I see what people make because I have access to all that information.
STEM grads make a lot of money. It's way more than you would think. I work in high Cost area, so my perspective is a little distorted. But I was shocked at what a lowly " Scientist II" was making. We're talking past $120,000.
but.....I don't think it is the degree that matters. If you're smart and have a good work ethic, you're going to do well. I can easily cross-reference with linkedin and see someone's educational background and job history. The most successful people don't necessarily come from the best schools or the best companies. I see a lot of people who have come from less prestigious companies and schools, but moved up really quickly.
Even at my own current job, being smart and hardworking get's you a lot farther than just having good grades and a degree. Myself for example, I received a perfect job review rating, and I am recognized as a rising star in the company. I work for a huge multinational and prestigious company. I am not terribly smart, but I thrive in a high-stress environment, and I perform much better under the preasure of a deadline. I never go online at work, and I can stay focused for hours on end. I also work much faster than other people. I guess I have a lot of "grit". If I can do well in this world, then I think that everyone can.

I seriously doubt that. The big Tech/science companies have their pick at the best, and they will PAY big money to make sure the best stay. Many of the companies give out gourmet quality food at either a really low price or for free. Furthermore, I was at a company where I saw the employees play football for 2 HOURs at lunch. This is a huge company and YOU have definitely used their products. You probably use their products everyday.
People talk about finance or bankers.....a Financial Analyst doesn't make nearly as much money as an engineer. Maybe an Ibanker, but Ibankers work 100+ hours a week. The people getting paid the most are always engineers and to a lessor degree the sales people. Funny thing is, I talk to people at these companies, and they always say, "we can't find enough good people", and there are so many STEM H1-b's. It's not like the H1-b's get paid less or something like that. Shyt, we have a hard time finding good people in the united states too.
It's crazy to see this divide. Everyone in this area is getting squeezed-out of the standard cost of living because the STEM grads are just raking in the dough and apply upward pressure on housing and food prices.
That alone will put America to 3rd world status.

The trend that I am seeing is that the STEM people move into the cities and turn them into "Never never lands" where they are dominated by young well-paid nerds and geeks. The traditional Urban crowd is getting pushed out. The traditional urban crowd may work in the cities, mainly in the unskilled Service industry, but they don't live there anymore.
It hasn't turned the Cities into Third World countries. They are turning into very clean places with low crime rates and 100's of ethnic food joints and art festivals. It's actually evolving the cities.
No one will travel long distances to work in an unskilled job. Especially when people don't have cars.
The problem isn't that 'the best can't eat.' The problem is that either you will be in the upper crust or you will be in poverty, which is essentially how 3rd world countries are set-up. Either you are in the class that owns the means of production or you are some wage slave getting paid a pittance. STEM might make a lot now, but what do you think would happen if everyone flooded into those fields? That's right, the wages would start to go down. What will happen when technology opens things up and makes it to where you can get 3 or 4 Indian ph.ds for the price of one American? Wages are going to go down. We can act like a problem doesn't exist and people are just choosing bad degrees, but the reality of the matter is that this nation has a serious employment problem.
The game is fukked up. What're you going to do about it though? Either sit around and complain, or bust your ass and try and get in somewhere?

Takes lot of money to move and mite not work out. Big risk, just like taking on student loan debt
Stem is too hard for the market to ever get Flooded like that. Most people simply aint built for it
