You should look up IVS lectures on youtube, if you're not going to read the book.
I've heard most of the information and sides of the topic, and I don't believe that West Africans sailed back and forth the Atlantic. I think that many voyages were launched sailing West, and that perhaps some Africans landed in the Americas and were absorbed into the gene pool of which ever group they encountered.
The dark skinned ethnic groups in the Western Hemisphere when Columbus landed were not Africans.
