Even though I think the renewed anti-trust scrutiny from government on the tech industry is necessary, the entire telecommunications industry in this country should be getting grilled right along with them. Not only have they reconsolidated since Ma Bell was broken up, they've spread their tentacles to other industries as well through acquisitions and mergers. And Comcast represents all of their worst impulses.

It'd be nice if local loop unbundling was a thing in the US. It'd force companies like Comcast to actually compete for their customers.

:francis: well its a wrap for all of us now... netflix, ps5, streaming, zoom calls, working from home.... :snoop: all because these b*stards want more money...

I've seen quite a few people write off the upcoming data cap as "well, I'm not over the cap now, so it'll be fine", without realizing that their bandwidth needs will likely rise over time as these services improve. Will your data cap rise at the same rate as this bandwidth inflation?

I'm glad I have Fios in my building (and Optimum as the crappier choice if they start pulling BS like this). The thought of having to deal with Comcast for any reason is disgusting to even think about :scust:

The monopoly power they have is bonkers to think about.

And I guarantee many of the same people who glorify the wonders of the free market will :cape: for companies like Comcast being able to treat their customers like they do because they literally don't have any competition across vast swaths of their operating territories.

I am and will always be against ANY data caps, and their reasoning is flawed and has always been flawed.
Find it interesting that cell services no longer using hard data caps and internet services are. Sad part is everyone else in the same space will follow suit. And what options do most of us have as an alternative? NONE.

well wait a second, what the fukk is their reasoning :dead:

does it cost them more to provide you with more data, or not?

No it doesn't. It costs them more to provide higher SPEED not higher DATA. Big distinction I'm sure you don't understand but will argue like you do.

The reasons?
1. data hogs. wtf is a data hog? Some person running a business from home? The fabled 5% of thos who use more than 1.5 TB per month are paying for the same service as someone who doesn't. Unlimited means just that.
2. cost of upgrading. Most ISP upgrades get subsides to upgrade by local/nation governments to not only upgrade the lines they have but to expand to more rural areas.
3. monopolies. If you have one, you can do whatever you can get local/state/national legislatures to pass, like an electric company asking to raise prices.

I'm posting this link that can better explain my platform:

They have a plan you can switch to call xFI unlimited that has no caps. Was only $11 more than I was already paying. I hit real close to that 1.2 limit over the summer.

That's a terrible idea in terms of security.
terrible idea all around. break them up or force them to compete in every territory, but the govt being responsible for providing internet service is just horrible. we need to get rid of the collusion that the internet providers engage in where they split up territory to avoid competition. at&t, verizon, spectrum, comcast, etc need to be forced to compete in every area.
We could copy Estonia.

:ohhh:@ You thinking the free market has anything to do with this, and that free marketers support these actors.
:wow:This is your beloved gov doing what it does.

You took the time to bold and underline the part of my post you responded to. So where did I say the free market actually had anything to do with this? :patrice:

I was specifically calling out people who speak out of both sides of their mouths about how the free market is the ideal for any category of goods and services and then through either their words or actions support monopolies like Comcast.

Kudos to you for tearing down that straw man though
