Hmmm . . . reading the Biden vs Trump thread and others in this sub-forum there seems to be a feeling or hope that if we elect Biden the country will get back on the right track and things will be OK in the near future.
But current events have me thinking, with the division in the country and massive economic and social upheaval currently happening, maybe 2016 was that pivotal and the loss so crippling there is no getting back on track no matter our best efforts. Things may continue to get worse and worse before they eventually get better?
Anyone thinking a switch is going to be turned the minute Biden wins (if he does) is likely mistaken. Unfortunately we are at a point where we need to get back to having someone actually interested in the job beyond their own interest.

Watching McConnell hand Trump another SC pick if she dies - after he made up a reason why Obama couldn't nominate someone in 2016 - should be icing on the cake to ensure democrats end the filibuster if they win the senate in November. You want to make a mockery of rules, let's go.

Uncle Joe will immediately return America to 1997, Trump will magically disappear, all the fascists appointed to the courts lately will literally evaporate, and all the insane rednecks armed to the teeth will convert to Islam and petition the government to replace the American flag with a Black Lives Matter banner.

Then perhaps the Democratic party will consider universal healthcare, but only for one week because then it will be time to focus on electing moderates in the 2022 primaries.

It's fukking ridiculous that she didn't step down during the Obama Administration...
You wanna know something else?

A lot of black politicos wanted Obama to replace her with this black woman.

Did you know Her husband is the twin brother of Ryan's brother-in-law?

Which would mean, Obama had the chance to put a black woman on the SCOTUS AND twist Paul Ryan's arm to do it :snoop:

It's been kinda weird how the Dems haven't used said filibuster nearly as much as the Rethugs when Obama was in office. I wonder why? :jbhmm:

Pretty simple. Obama had 59 democrat votes in the senate in January 2009, which would become 60 (super majority) a few months later after a court case was settled to confirm Al Franken had won his senate race. Democrats had two old/sick senators who missed votes at the time (Robert Byrd and Ted Kennedy) which lowered the vote total to 58 often, thus allowing republicans to filibuster. Then of course Kennedy died and republicans won the special election to temporarily replace his seat. Obama still managed to get a lot of legislation through and signed into law.

Dems haven't filibustered Trump much because republicans don't give a fukk about government and have barely passed any legislation. They passed the tax bill, which only needed 51 votes (ie could not be filibustered); any type of tax policy change only needs a 51 majority. They failed to pass the Obamacare repeal bill, which they attempted to pass via reconciliation - a senate tactic that allows you to pass certain bills with 51 votes without filibuster. They did pass a couple coronavirus relief bills, which had bipartisan support. Outside of that, Trump has no legislative victories or "interesting moments." Just the typical spending bills that every president signs yearly.

Dems won the House in 2018 and since then, Trump has basically been a lame duck president when it comes to passing agenda items. He can't do anything unless it can pass the House, meaning the senate doesn't really...do anything.
