I was on wikipedia, saw this pic, and had an epiphany about how racist cacs were about art in the 1700s.

this pic is of figurines representing what Germans thought were 4 continents on earth. the first is Asia, second is Europa, third is Africa, and last is America.

on its face, Africa looks like a racist caricature. Then I looked at the other women; they're all wearing red lipstick. Is it possible that black face existed in Europe because artists just couldn't draw black people without contrasting one thing with another? the pale skin of the other women is contrasted by red cheeks and lipstick. but what can you contrast against dark skin? red cheeks won't show, white powder would look weird, gold and colorful clothing are already on most paintings of black people, so what's left?

i think cac artists, who were very racist still, wanted to contrast their subjects and found it hard to cause of their limited thinking of black skin.
