1. 'The Corner' was such an ill first single, and help to make me forget the Badu-infused Common from the prior album. "It's Your World' is not only my favorite Common song, it's one of my favorite songs of any genre. Pop's talk at the end always has me choked up.
BE came out just as I finished A.I.T. and had gone to my permanent duty station and was feeling sad, this album got me through a lonely time. Common x Kanye (with J. Dilla) was something so beautiful. My favorite verse was on the song "Real People" wahen Com says:
"I wonder if the spirits of Bob Marley and Haile Selassie watch me,
as the cops be tryna pop and lock me,
they cocky, plus their mentality is Nazi
the way they treat blacks, I wanna snap like paparazzi..."
2. As for Mayer. I am still a fan for sure. His first two albums are classics, but it was
Continuum that saw him become what he was destined to be. That album came out when I was deployed to Iraq and along with RHCP's
Stadium Arcadium and Prince's
3121 helped me get through a hellish year.
Everything changed after the ill-fated Playboy interview. He said some unsavory things, but I think he was trying to be edgy and comedic but got caught up.
Battle Studies album reflected that withdrawal after the backlash.
Born & Raised had 'Walt Grace's Submarine Test' which I really like, Paradise Valley has a gorgeous ballad 'Waiting on the Day'.
The Search for Everything was a return to the Mayer of the first three albums, so I was excited that
Sob Rock would continue in that direction. It was a let-down, not nearly enough guitar, but I only listened once on the day it was released.
