reading this thread made me realize ... its not common thats overrated

its his fans

when I listen to common, I love it... when you listen to his fans
they try to make you listen to his worst shyt and come up with reasons why its "actually the best"
and you just get this cycle of convo over the worst sample of Common

I'm a Com Sense fan but Can I Borrow a Dollar is ehhhhh, I HATE Like Water for Chocolate (cept 6th Sense) and you can't even discuss Universal Mind Control or Electric Circus.

So you have Resurrection which is a good album, One Day It'll All Make Sense, Be.

I'm up in the air on Dreamer/Believer and Finding Forever. He's right about where he should be, a solid career.
In the past 10 years, I listen to Dreamer/Believer, Finding Forever a lot more. I also like Nobody Smiling and Black America Again.

He's pretty much become forgotten as a rapper. But he still only has 2 wack albums - Electric Circus & Universal Mind Control. I still don't like Like Water...hell, my 20+ yr old CD is still in pristine condition, but for those that do, I won't say it's wack...just not for me. Actually he has one of the better discographies

Common is far from overrated I just think he’s one of those artists that needs to work closely with a producer to give him the sonic direction. He dropped dope projects when with NoID, Kanye and Dilla.

I agree with this. He’s one of my faves, and like another one of mine…Nas…I think an entire album of theirs is at its optimal performance when there’s one primary producer on it, and the whole thing has a cohesive feel and sound

Honestly his look and being from Chicago are major reasons he gets overlooked and underrated. If he was from NY he'd get more respect in "rap list" convos.

I don’t think him being from the Chi was an issue for him.

Dude dropped during a time when underground MC's at his level were being overlooked no matter where they were from. There were a million MC's from NYC, that weren't getting the love they deserved, even though they were incredible and dropping classics.

Common's been underrated forever because he's always been a pure MC and didn't chase commercial praise. Even at his most popular, he always stayed in his own lane and kinda just did his thing below the radar. Being from NYC doesn't automatically give a dope MC light. There are a ton of NY rappers who would testify to that (no pun intended).

Common in my top 10/15 any day of the week

Only his "light" tone takes him down a notch for me

Resurrection and LWFC goat albums 100%

I like some of his music in doses

One Day it’ll Make sense is a classic

I like most of LWFC for its production than i do his rapping; not that his rapping was bad, it’s just the production on there was so nice i get distracted by that over his rhymes

But One Day It’ll Make sense was a perfect balance of introspective/retrospective rhymes with clever wordplay and just Common at his core and finding his voice as an artist. Great songwriting on that album

Resurrection is cool and I get why nikkas love it, but that’s a “let me flex on these nikkas with lyrical gymnastics album” to me

I need meaningful songs with the wordplay and clever rhymes and One Day It’ll Make Sense has all of that
