Common is overrated as ****

Common was that guy when he still had that vulgar streak in him. Ever since Be he's been on that safe adult contemporary shyt. And I like Be but the corny bars started to appear with regularity from that album on. And it's been a wrap since.

Truth.

After Be, with the exception of maybe The Dreamer / The Believer, he's been on his "grown man rap" sh*t. Which I think gets wild boring after like 30 seconds. But from '93-'05, dude was a seriously elite MC. He still has it, but his whole vibe got on some "we shall overcome" sh*t that he never got away from. He could easily be thrown in any Top 10 though.

For me he is somewhere between 30 to 40 in the top MCs list. Unless someone says he is absolutely above that - he ain't overrated IMO.

I don’t think him being from the Chi was an issue for him.

Dude dropped during a time when underground MC's at his level were being overlooked no matter where they were from. There were a million MC's from NYC, that weren't getting the love they deserved, even though they were incredible and dropping classics.

Common's been underrated forever because he's always been a pure MC and didn't chase commercial praise. Even at his most popular, he always stayed in his own lane and kinda just did his thing below the radar. Being from NYC doesn't automatically give a dope MC light. There are a ton of NY rappers who would testify to that (no pun intended).

Common is my favorite emcee of all time but he chased commerical success a few times he's just not good at it. The problem is Common isn't really a commercial artist so unless he has a guest apperance on a commercial track or features a pop act on his song it's not going commercial.

Pharrell couldn't make Common pop with that god awful Neptunes album. Common is a legend skills wise but he was never really designed as a commercial artist, everytime he tries to dumb it down for radio he sounds corny AF.

I never felt he chased that.

He always made joints during his prime that pretty much fit in with what he always did, in my opinion. During his Kanye run, he was making records that Ye gave him, but I never saw him as getting away from the usual formula.

With the Neptunes joint, I think that was him being experimental. Which is what he said. Because none of that wack ass music was ever going to be hits for him. HAHA! That was trash on a different kinda level. He's tried to switch it up a few times, but I don’t think an MC like Common has ever been commercial-ready. It's just not his thing.

One Day it’ll Make sense is dope but for me I'll have behind Resurrection, LWFC and BE.

I'd have it on a par with Finding Forever and Auditorium Vol 1 with Pete - Common has a great catalogue I mean that's at least 6 full bodies of work of consistent high quality. The number of Rappers who can boast that is extremely small.

Where? To who? Internet message forums? Seldom is Common ever mentioned outside of them. He’s actually underrated, he’s an exceptional MC. I got him >>> Black Thought. Thought is fire, I just use him because I see a lot of people carry him like he’s just unbelievable with it and some sort of bar for lyricism …I get it I guess…Com is greater tho imo. Shhit be layered and heavy…and lyrical miracle with it…not just simply lyrical miracle, nigs was on that in 2002 respectfully. I guess Com’s vibe and style turns them off to him as a rapper…cause it can’t be the bar work
