The premise of Complex's argument, that the fact that Illmatic is just straight boom bap NY hip hop makes it inherently inferior to the mainstream geared sound of IWW is extremely troubling. And its something I've noticed from them before. They stay low key shytting on boom bap. That's why I say fukk complex.
NY boom bap is as good as hip hop gets. Same with a few other regional sounds from that time. No one ever shyts on The Chronic because it's just a g funk album.

I agree. tbh, whenever I think of quintessential Hip Hop production, Boom Bap always, always comes to mind first....drums..horns, jazzy samples all that.

We all get that and it was discussed on the first page.

And it is just an idea or a thought. It sure as fukk isn't a 'fact' and most people will disagree.

Never said it was a fact, and I don't agree with it, but it's hardly trolling.

I don't care what Complex, the Source, Rolling Stones Magazine or whatever the news source there is says...

I bought Illmatic when it came out...I bought IWW the same day it came out...and

there is no question in my mind that Illmatic is the BETTER overall album. period point blank.

I don't care how much they try to break it down and become revisionist with this stuff.

Back in 1996...ALOT of Nas fans were dissapointed with IWW because they felt it fell off from Illmatic.

IWW is a dope album and it doesn't soundated at all, but when you put the whole hisptory and complexity of the album together...it aint on the same level.

Illmatic is the most replayable album in hip hop history.

Maybe it's the beats, maybe it's the rhymes or how Nas just flows over each track like butter, maybe it's all of above...but I can listen to almost any song on there 20 times in a row with ease. Can't say that about many albums including a few of Nas' other classics.

Hm..I think The Infamous is just as replayable as Illmatic. That's why to me they're 1a and 1b, both albums incredibly cohesive and I always play them front to back.

IWW on the other hand I have to make a playlist of 4 or 5 songs out of the whole album.

I agree with the rest of your post though.

It's extremely rare that I ever hear someone say that...but IMO that is 110% true.

IMO Illmatic is the best ever with Infamous right behind it and I've felt that way since the mid 90s.

They could be right, I mean Illmatic is the Holy Grail of Hip-Hop but IWW put you in that zone when you played that album :banderas:, Nas was on some other shyt when he crafted that masterpiece :wow:

I've always said it was my favorite album of all time

Really? Hm..well I remember there was a poll on here or something comparing the two, and the consensus was that you couldn't go wrong with either choice. The Infamous is just as consistent, and just as noteworthy musically as Illmatic...the only area where I really put Illmatic over the Infamous would be lyrcism...Nas's approach to rapping on Illmatic was otheworldy. But in terms of everything else? The Infamous can see Illmatic

Imo it's more rare for someone to put The Infamous over Illmatic. At most I hear nikkas declare a tie between the two.
