You could move to the outskirts of DC. Still relatively cheap out here where I am.
Or you could move to Virginia or Maryland and live a relatively quiet suburban life without too painful a commute if you take Metro. Might be a bit more painful if you drive but some people enjoy that time.
Keep in mind the Cost of Living in DC. Double your salary = You will be making the same you make now in DC.
Cost of living: How far will my salary go in another city? - CNNMoney
Go to that site and enter your current salary and see what it says when u pick DC as the city you want to move to. If the Salary they say in DC is less that your offer then you will be hustling backwards.
Great point
Idk bruh
I've consider this, I've lived in DC for 10 years so I know the costs, it's expensive but not twice as expensive. I planned to live very frugal in DC. Instead of paying 1300$ a month for an apt, I'm rent a room from my best friend for 500-600$. I have all the clothes, shoes I need. Really eat out cause I can cook good.
The way I plan to live and how much I'll be making, I should be able to save 1000$ every 2 weeks.
True but I`m the type where If I live in a city I want to actually live in the city and not some remote suburb. Everyone is different though. But either way a lot of people get jugged by getting offers to go to cities and the salary seems high but they are thinking how far the salary would take them in their home town and not the actual city.
For example if you make 80k in ATL you would need to make 150k in Manhattan NY to live the same quality of life.
How long did it take you to get to the position you are in?
This IT thing really big/profitable around here huh![]()
Well as long as you know you can save at least 1k a month then I say go for it. I`m just not big on DC because its literally only Govt. Contracting work, but as long as you are able to stack then you should be good.
I'm not big on DC either, I spend most of my time in PG and Bmore, but I got to sacrifice and get this bread bcuz I'm not saving nothing right now. As a Black man I feel I got to get this gravy while it last, never know when these opportunities will stop coming in.
what is the down side?I love Louisiana.
Current Situation:
My life is great outside of work. Love seeing my family every weekend and I have a great great woman that would probably move with me after a while, I know she would hate DC tho. And Louisiana is the best State in the Fall and Winter with all of the festivals, parades and trailrides. So I'm know I'm going to be home I've lived in DC from 2004-2014, so I know my way around and a lot of people. I already have a place to stay with and my current lease ends in a few weeks. So it would be an easy move for most part. And staying with my friend for 500-600$ a month would allow me to save so much. IT jobs in Louisiana are hard to come by reason they can lowball you on the pay. I'm not currently using my Top Secret Clearance, which will go inactive soon. I'm currently in a Tier 2 Midlevel Sys Admin position and I don't really see a path to a better position or more money here anytime soon. This new job is a Senior level position. My current job sucks too, I work 7pm to 7am, Sun night, mon night, tues night and every other Wednesday. So I have a 3 or 4 day weekend, every weekend, but this job sucks. We bust our azz. A lot of conference calls, paperwork, working remotely, coordinating. I've never had to do so much on a job for this little bit of money. I make enough to live comfortable, but I'm not really saving much and I don't shop or eat out much. Another issue is, I don't ever think I can feel comfortable in a IT job in Louisiana unless it's a Gov't position, which I've applied for.
My plan:
It move back for 6 months to a year to keep my Top Secret clearance active, save and keep my Security+ CE cert valid, bcuz in my current job I have to motivation to do anything IT when I off. After 6 months I plan to start looking for a job back in Louisiana, unless my girl moves up and we're both doing well our careers. Eventually I feel like we're going to have to live in Dallas or Houston to live a very comfortable life, but a few spot are on the come up in Louisiana. My girl has a business degree and is a few credits away from her accounting degree, so I feel we could live anywhere. Another issue, I'm 30+. I want to settle down and start a family. My girl is down, but we're kind of new, but our families have been connected before we were born. Her dad and my dad were like brothers. Our moms use to hangout too. I feel she would stay loyal, but I don't want to put too much strain on our relationship so early. That's why I want her to move up in the new year or I'm moving back to Louisiana.
The Job:
Pay about 8k short of Double what I'm currently making
Normal 8-4pm hours
3 or 4 weeks of vacation, To whole benefits package
They want me to start in 2 weeks.
What would you guys think?
ReceiptsIm pretty sure the OP has made the same exact thread with the situation reversed.
Lives in DC but take less money to move to Louisiana
