I think she did this to herself cause she made a choice to do this, plain and simple.

She was obviously confident in her dark skin back in the day, but she wanted to be light skinned like many non famous dark skinned people of many races. She was a sex symbol back in the day.

Seems more like an obsession with surgery. She started and couldn't stop.
