Convince me that Miguel Cabrera deserves to be the AL MVP.

If Miggy wins the triple crown he'll get every first place vote

As Aaron Shatz put it today, stat guys need to make their stand with big mistakes and not small mistakes.

Having a fit over a guy who's going to win the triple crown with an OPS over 1.000 makes these stats nerds look pretty ridiculous.

The stat: Cabrera has hit 11 home runs in September/October while driving in 28 runs in the 29 games. The Tigers were three games out with 15 to play and roared past Chicago to win the AL Central. The Angels went home.

SIGH.

On September 1st, the Tigers were 3 games behind the White Sox. The Angels were 4.5 games behind the A's.

Since then...

The Tigers are 17-12

The Angels are 19-9

The White Sox are 12-16

The A's are 17-11

Do you see how stupid that logic is?

Miguel Cabrera's case for MVP is not stronger because the White Sox suck.

No, this is a pretty big mistake.

A guy with a 1.001 OPS is going to beat a guy with a .963 OPS, despite the fact that the first guy provides AT BEST zero value in the field or on the bases and the second guy is arguably the best in the league at both.

Aaron Shatz should stick to football in this case. He's missing the point.

This should never have been about stats. You know who really made it about stats? Camp Cabrera with the "but the Triple Crown!" chants. Trout has been labeled as the "stats" choice when in reality he's the all-around choice. Using value beyond what a player does at the plate is not a "stats" argument. It's common sense.

no, its the fact that he has the stats, and his team is playoff bound albeit in a weaker division, there still has to be a winner of that division (and they're only 2 games behind the angels and could actually be tied at the end of the year)

it wont be a travesty if he doesnt win, both are deserving of the award, but trout wont win it - he can have ROY

Well like one poster said earlier in the thread, Miggy has a higher percentage of his teams total WAR over Trout. And when it comes to MVP writers always say MVP isn't just the best player but who is more important to his team. With Miggy having higher percentage of his teams WAR couldn't the argument be made he has been more successful to his teams success and if so it would support the who is more important to their team argument.
