Why are young players in their first, second or third year getting called busts so fast nowadays? I'm seeing both NBA and NFL fans writing off young players even when they have shown flashes of their potential.

Is this just a social media thing? People getting tired of all the hyped up draft prospects? What changed?

This is exactly my sentiments. I personally don't overrate or underrate a player until their 3rd season and/or how they perform in the playoffs playing meaningful minutes

I don't see BUST as much in other leagues, so I'll stick to the NBA

Back in the day, players stayed 4 years at college. At least most of it. Jordan coming out after 3 years was crazy to some. First player who ever left early from Dean Smith's program. As a JUNIOR!! So back then, players picked high were more assured to be good or great, because you watched them be good or great for so long.

The slow transition to today, where 1 and done became the norm... You now are taking huge risks with these guys. You might have seen 2-4 years of high school ball, on some super team.. Then you maybe get 1-2 seasons of them in college.

That's college in an NCAAB that nobody cares about anymore, no memorable programs or teams, no epic runs... Hell, last few high picks barely played, some didn't make the tourney, and others bombed in it....

You're gonna get 1-2 NBA seasons to do SOMETHING major. Or to fans, you are a waste of a pick that would have got a hall of famer, and maybe a top 10 ever player, 25 years ago.

Yea, noticed that. It will be like 1 game and they will called bust. Kind of seeing it with JJ McCarthy. Now dudes are saying KOC kept him for a.reason after the Detroit win

That’s a byproduct of how sports are reported on comparatively to back 15/20/25 years ago. “Hot takes” and “Embrace the debate” over reporting, recognizing trends/understanding the operation/knowing the nuances of the game, eyeball tests, statistics, and historical knowledge

For instance, this Dodgers/Blue Jays World Series was easily the greatest World Series in a generation, but because of so often hearing how great some have been in the moment because of one game or a couple of moments….. it’s lost on the casual fan who has moved on to the next thing.

We aren’t required to know sports like we used to. We’re supposed to hear a narrative based on a situation/game and then parrot it or argue against it.

Yeah its not "Lebron James."

Its the modern new cycle coupled with the emergence of social media and its infiltrated most aspects of modern life.

But it is because LeBron James. He’s the figure at the center of it. So much hype from his senior year and it actually worked out so well that people say he underachieved. How many people discredited him or latched themselves to his story and became a name? And in their haste to find the “next one”, they proclaim X or Y is, and when that fails…. You always have that lightning rod over the past 21 years.

It’s how the media saw to become “next” themselves. Look at who they compare Sidney Crosby to. He’s not Gretzky like LeBron isn’t Jordan. Any young phenom is the LeBron James of their sport. Longevity. LeBron. He’s the foil to Jordan and “winning”.

He’s the new scope with that we analyze all athletes through, especially when they are young, talented and haven’t harnessed their talents.

But it is because LeBron James.

You see it across different sports leagues, across different professions, etc so it was inevitable. In fact, the hot take produce immediate culture we see now didn't start occurring until the layman got a platform via social media and the news cycle had access to bombard us 24/7 a good decade after he was drafted.

That’s a fair point.
