Obviously dude was dumbass for coming out the truck all aggressive like that, but how hard would it have been for the officer to maintain a safe distance and if the suspect rushed him to deliver a non-fatal shot.

You have a gun and you believe someone is about to take out a deadly weapon to use against you, you shoot to KILL. Period. You try to hit that big-ass upper torso/chest area. You don't waste time intentionally trying to hit a much smaller part of the body, just because you're more concerned about that person's life, despite the fact that they couldn't care less about yours

Incorrect.

In these cases, law enforcement is supposed to shoot to incapacitate. That's what all that training is for. You have to be able to shoot that knife/weapon out of their hand, or shoot that leg to keep them from fleeing, etc. The last thing you want is a fatality, regardless of their feelings about you.

You're somewhat right, saying to simply shoot dude in the leg is oversimplification of the situation.

But I find it how odd that armed with a gun against dude with a knife, the cops felt his safest course of action for his own safety was to move closer to the suspect?
