Corey never did anything to capture mainstreams attention in a way that Eddie Murphy or Martin Lawrence did. So the mainstream never got a chance to fall in love with him to the point where if something controversial happens he will still have that support just off of the love the mainstream gave him, similar to how the tranny stuff involving Eddie can be sidestepped by all his classic movies and stand up.
