Hammer was amazing to me, Ive held him in high regard for years..his visuals alone had my eyes glued to the screen in utter disbelief.

I suspect the hate he got was because he went down a lane most rappers couldnt compete in without looking like fools.
You could out rap him, but you werent out entertaining him..

:salute:

NY all day..Da Stead & BK..
It seems like there was a vendetta against him or sumn, like he never ever gets mentioned. History lowkey did him worse than it did Vanilla Ice...like they're pretty much the same to most fans who don't know better.
And that’s the crazy shyt. Hammer was WAY different than Vanilla Ice. If anything Vanilla Ice bit off of him. Plus he was a real street nikka. Only thing he was wildin about was beefing with Michael Jackson. lol.

Hammer had very minimal lyrical and rapping ability, danced and performed in a c00nish manner, became huge and also helped popularized that formula.

So arguably, Hammer helped further commercialize and water down rap and hip hop as a culture.

I grew up on this so while I respect Mega, let's not forget the fuller context.

You're probably on point but, seeing the forest for the trees, him "commercializing" rap and putting it in them different markets and homes and business meetings, etc... is the real thing we should be looking at...him "watering rap down" or not being lyrical is small potatoes in comparison, imo of course. Plenty of other relatively big rappers at the time made up for that part.

Hammer was my first favorite rapper as a little kid.

Please Hammer don't hurt em is still one of the best selling rap albums of all time over 30 years later. That's an amazing feat.

The culture was in it's infancy in the late 80s/early 90s. The money wasn't there for the majority, so I understand why he received the backlash he did. He was a trailblazer for those who where able to crossover into the mainstream.

I'm glad that Hammer is getting a more favorable look as time goes on.

I get ur point however here's why Hammw wasn't and even till this day, isn't received well in the hip hop community.

Run DMC and then LL were bringing world attention to Hip Hip. LL did it with lyrics, accessible clothes and bottom line represented what was seen as "real"

Hammer se took this to another level however,.I'd he were more lyrical, or even if he were a conscious rapper, that then became as successful, the whole landscape would've changed

After Hamer, record execs and other's, looked for watered down rap and pushed that.

I'm old enough to remember Hammer when he dropped. The shyt was madness and unlike anything I'd ever seen before. Whenever that Turn This Mother Out video dropped my entire house lost it and tried to do every dance routine in the video.

I swear he had everyone wearing the baggy hammer pants all over Houston at the time and some cats were even getting finger waves. Really weird time for rap but he was the biggest star on the planet at a time (even if it was short lived) when it was quiet for a lot of stars.

The crazy thing about that is everyone keeps labeling artists plants, but Vanilla Ice was every bit of one and he openly admits it now
