you know what's interesting? all the coli's heavy Nas stans are noticeably absent from this thread. even with the beef long squashed i think they still feel a way. an album by a guy whose mentioned by name on Illmatic, produced entirely by Nas' mentor and not a one of those Nas fans are in here. Odd. Telling.

I'd expect at least a few potshots about his flow or some shyt.

Your right about this (with some exceptions), I noticed this too. It's like some people feel like they have to pick a side instead of just enjoying good music. Comega and Nas are cool anyway, like one of them once said if either of them saw of them being jumped by someone's stan they wouldn't join in but help the other out. They are pretty much long term friends that have had some disagreements along the way, but still have love for eachother there. I'm not beefin with none of them lol, if their music good I'll play it. I think a lot of people are scared that Mega dropped an album better than Nas' last one, they will be in denial about that. They want Mega to be in Nas' shadow, personally I always viewed them as two separate artists. And I know from what I've seen Mel your not really a big Nas fan overall but personally I'm a huge Nas fan and a huge Mega fan, I like Mobb, Tragedy and a bunch of them. There in house shyt doesn't effect me. Unless someone's abusing children or something to that level it's not my business. A lot of people criticise the state of Hip Hop but then when somebody delivers exactly what they want they STILL complain lol. They just love complaining.

Lyrics - Tick
Beats - Tick
Substance - Tick
Flow - Tick

Etc, and the lyrics, substance and even the flow are pretty much unarguable.

Thoughts on this album? No beef. No snark.

Great album. Might be right up there with Pinata as my fav of the year so far. No outstanding beats but Mega's enlightenment makes this one of the best listens of the last few years. He touches on Black disconnection, gentrification, industry politics, the fractured state of the Black community...basically the topics that we wish all of our more acclaimed black MC's would talk about. And he does it with elite MC acuity. I'm loving this and I gained even more respect for Mega for this album. I don't mind the short tracks. Nice and contrite. It's kind of depressing that this will most assuredly fly under the radar.

I'm just checking in now because i actually just got to listen to the album last night. I listened to it several times last night and once this morning and I'm loving it. I wasn't in this thread because I don't usually jump into album threads, posting sh!t, if I ain't heard it yet. I've always fvcked with Mega, even when the Nas beef was thick. He's a dope MC and he just strikes me as a real n!gga. No extra sh!t...just real. And Large Professor is a legend. I literally never heard of anyone who doesn't fvck with Large Pro.

@Big Mel

Nas is my number 1 rapper, but I don't see why that would prevent me or anyone else enjoying this album.

That beef is dead, good music is good music and Mega got one with this.

Plus i'm a grown man :lolbron:

Real sh!t. And honestly, I never really see Nas fans sh!tting on Mega. Seriously.

I've seen it quite a bit, unfortunately, as I'm a fan of both. You get the reasonable ones from each fan base then the ones who feel they need to be on one's side like a cheerleader lol.

O ok, Ruler. I never witnessed it myself tho. The hip hop fans that I socialize with, that are big Nas fans, never hate on Mega.

Yeah I feel you man, like I said I'm a huge fan of both, infact have Nas ahead of Mega on my GOAT list thus far but it's just a shame when people seem to still be on that Pac OR Big shyt lol etc lol. That's good though, hopefully they will grow and the more hateful ones decrease lol.

Heaven on Earth
Listened just now after several respectable posters pulled my coat on how great this would be..

A New Day Begins- The piano riff reminds me of that Queens Get The Money track by Jay Electronica off of Untitled. Lyrics were good. The track is difficult to ride or find a pocket but he did okay.

MARS-Mega's flow started off choppy (always been my gripe with him and I see it hasn't changed). The track sounds kinda generic. Styles P and Redman did their thing.

Industry-Subject matter 10/10 Delivery 4/10. Man these tracks sound dated..The Honorable Minister murdered him on his own sh1t. "Cuz you the sh1t, naw you just doo-doo"
:wow: :mjlol:

Now I've seen dudes like Big Mel mocking other rappers corny simple simon punchlines so I want an honest account and how he could let that type of fukkery breathe..

More-Again. The subject matter :salute: , The flow :camby: The track :camby: The chick on the hook :camby: But the subject matter :salute: Man this legit sounds like some late 80's christian rap..

D.U.- I think I see where this is headed. Classic break beat. Golden era New York sound. My n1gga Nature!!! :wow: Cool song..

Honorable- Raekwon is breath of fresh air. I needed this. Now its gonna be hard to go back to Mega's summer of '87 flow.

Rap Basquiat-Okay he's snapping on this one. In pocket. Again subject matter is flawless. What the people need.

Oh here comes that old head New York elitism about "real hip hop" "skinny jeans" and "snap music" on the outro

*cringes a little

Snap music? Really? Is this 2005? Snap and skinny jeans aint even the same era. This just seems like some gripe about anything that's different from the stat quo of "essence" based hip hop..

Rise-Cool I guess. I think a lot of these songs would read better off of paper than it sounds to me. Because the depth, thoughtfulness and meaning is there. But my Southern roots can't get past the boom bap pots and pans production.

Home-Like the bass guitar on this track. Would love to hear Chrissette Michelle croon over this one. More broken Mega flow and suspect punchlines . "Everybody wanna eat but they wont do the dishes"

:stopitslime:

Valuable Lessons-You know what man, I've heard enough. I ain't about this life honestly. This is music for n1ggas that wear Timbs with jean shorts. If you're a fan of 80's New York hip hop then I can see this album is tailor made for you. I can't throw shade because there is a lane and audience for this. Sonically I just can't rock with this.

I guess this is what happens when the South births you and the Westcoast raises you...

Not enough funk, not enough drum, not enough aggression in the tone...Too much meat and potatoes and no dessert..I wish someone in NY could find a happy medium between this type of music and French Montana. I want to know what NEW York's sound is. I heard this all back in grade school.

Ironically on Industry Farrakhan says "They don't listen to their preachers" and halfway through the album I realized that Mega was coming off as really preachy and I wanted to stop listening. But its not because of what he was saying it was in how it sounded.. I could listen to Dead Prez or Killer Mike say the same things in a much more compelling and entertaining way over much more dynamic production..I also feel like Mega is a much better writer than a rapper..I give him points for addressing certain topics, but at the end of the day it has to sound good to me also...

Revoke my "real hip hop" card ..

:yeshrug:

I'm gonna go listen to some country rap tunes as a palate cleanser

Why, Gator King, why? :to:

Nah, seriously i got no problems with any of that, Mega got his own lane which probably ain't accessible for most people, but it's that lane which makes him probably my favourite rapper of the last 13-14 years.

Props for this type of critical analysis. haven't heard the album yet, I've only heard industry - which I thought was flat out amazing (although you're right about the shyt/doo-doo line).
You've suffered enough listening to "real" hip-hop.
I think you've earned a few listens to that St. Lunatics album...:salute:
