We just got back from Toronto being there all last week as my cousin got married. Now a bunch of folks on my mom side of the family who we saw on Saturday are getting sick

Me and my mom so far are negative.. my mom says she has some aches but is fine. We both got boosted in October with bivalent. My brother unfortunately didn't so perhaps that booster is giving us protection?

This was just published in China (for anyone that missed the news): one jogger infected 35 people in the park.

One person got infected outside despite wearing a mask (my guess is that it was probably chirurgical).


Some omicron variants got so contagious to be able to spread outside easily.

This is the first time a superspreader event outside got recorded, traced and genetically sequenced to prove outside spread.
Only China was able to prove such an event due to extensive surveillance (both on CCTV and cell phone tracing), and mandated PCR testing for everyone exposed.

Previous outside infections always left a doubt of a possible additional contact inside...


An Outbreak of SARS-CoV-2 Omicron Subvariant BA.2.76 in an Outdoor Park — Chongqing Municipality, China, August 2022

Of the 2,836 people potentially exposed in the park, 39 tested SARS-CoV-2 positive. Gene analysis from the 39 cases showed highly homologous when compared to Patient Zero. Epidemiological investigations supported that Patient Zero transmitted to the following 33 visitors and 2 park cleaners and the 2 cleaners transmitted to 4 colleagues. This outbreak indicated that the Omicron subvariant BA.2.76 could be easily transmitted to others outdoors if they are not equipped with effective protection equipment.

Close contacts were persons who have a distance of less than 1 meter with Patient Zero and without effective prevention measures. At-risk populations were persons who had been to areas that Patient Zero visited while without close contact with Patient Zero. Close contacts were quarantined at hotels for 7 days and at-risk populations were quarantined at home for 3 days. Finally, 256 close contacts and 20,496 at-risk populations were identified. Health personnel took daily throat swab for SARS-CoV-2 nucleic acid PCR tests for them.

On August 16, Patient Zero entered the park through the east gate at 6:54 am, jogged counterclockwise to the lake and circled the lake 4 times. He left the park along the same roads at the east gate at 07:29. The path width of jogging was about 4 meters. The wind speed was 0.5–3.0 m/s, the temperatures were 33.0℃–42℃ and the air humidity was 44%–48% when Patient Zero was jogging. The east gate of the park is the main gate, with convenient transportation, and a good flow of people. During the jogging time, there were 104 close contacts who have a distance less than 1 meter with Patient Zero and without wearing masks.

I report the trend at work, but beyond that, no, I don't track COVID news. I came in here because I figured there'd be something actionable that could help with my reporting. From what I can tell, it's still maintaining your distance; if you can't, mask up. Am I wrong? If I'm right, why would I need to follow COVID news closely enough to be mad at someone asking why this thread is stickied lol?

For the crowd that needs this to stay stickied, I'll say it again for the last time. I don't actually care if it's stickied. I was surprised that a thread with so little activity is still stickied. That is all I was trying to say. If you're reading this and that upsets you, you need to look at yourself and figure out what's really bothering you because you're being irrational.

Man...I'm at the inlaws for Thanksgiving and my brother in law is coughing the whole time. I'm thinking "Did this man just have us all over like this?" I'm like all night. Two days later I have a cough. Mind you I had Covid for the first time three months ago and really don't want to get it again. Took two tests a couple of days apart and both were negative. Wifey negative as well. Being around people is wack because of potential illness. The food was good but is it really worth being sick for almost a week?

Nah, when this thread had more activity during the early days I’d come here for info I could use in my brief.

I haven’t seen anything useful in a long while so I stopped looking.

I only knew about the jogger cuz when the angry mob came after me for asking questions I wanted to see if I missed anything, it’s possible but all I could see on this page was the jogger article and the cruise ship article. And those are barely useful.
