You still need time for the community to become immune.

Polio took 5 years to eradicate once the vaccination started in America

eh? if the antibodies (as it seems) only last a few (3) months then that's not going to happen.

plus we know that there are animal reservoirs - mink, cats, dogs. and then you have mutations.

as things stand I think that improved therapeutics / tests are needed to yield satisfactory long term results.

So we even know if it will be a yearly thing or a booster shot after a few years?

There are different vaccines - see this list COVID-19 vaccine - Wikipedia .

The Pfizer one needs two initial doses. There are other vaccines in the pipeline some of which might not need the two initial doses.

Studies that I have seen show that covid19 antibodies last around (on avg.) 3 months for most people. Antibodies are not the entire story but if T-cell/primary immune system behaviour remains the same then antibodies are the scenario differentiator. There are also question about the effect the vaccine has on transmission.

It should reduce deaths though and that will buy academia time to work on other solutions and to work on some of the open questions.

As for boosters from what I have read it is likely that repeat shots will be needed as antibody levels reduce over time.

Truth be told someone needs to publish an official roadmap to normality. For all the talk I haven't seen one yet.

I have been a bit pre-occupied with the election recently so it could just be that I haven't been looking hard enough for one.
