India still has almost 400K less deaths than America. :mindblown:
India still has a lot of advantages to keep #'s down, but you should also realize that most people in India die without any official cause of death. Especially among the vulnerable poor and in villages, which covers hundreds of millions of people. It may be impossible to know how many have actually died. And that's before you even consider that health officials there are likely straight lying in many cases according to reports from the hospitals themselves.

That being said, I know enough people in the midst of shyt to know that it isn't as bad as it could be.

Guns, germs, and steel.

European diseases didn’t destroy Africa because the tribes were spread out.

States in India are still train rides away
Agree with that in Africa but in India this isn't helping them AT ALL. Population density in India is ridiculously high as is mobility. Why does it matter that states are train rides away if the virus is very well established in every state and people are moving around the states constantly with the average Indian in contact with 50x as many people as the average American is?

A young population profile, hot humid climate, strong sun exposure, low BMI among the poor, and robust immune system response to viruses are likely the main reasons that fatalities haven't been even worse. A year ago when the government totally shut down the streets and interstate travel you could say that low mobility was helping, but travel has been back up for 9+ months now.

It's tough over there. Modi dropped the ball big time.
Pretty much fukked it up at every level. Pulled a draconian lockdown early on that killed thousands of people with no meaningful stipulations to keep the poor alive without income and no long-term plan once the lockdown was over. Then ramped back up to full working while ignoring the growing crisis. Blamed Muslims for one fringe sect holding a minor convention before lockdown even started, but then let Hindus hold a massive festival drawing millions from across the country and not saying a word. Hospital access has been shyt, health care workers so terrified of Covid that they are turning away dying people at their doors even while their halls are empty cause the dying people haven't had a Covid test. And now he's running fukking election rallies in the middle of their worst surge.

If only the hospitals had been empty all year with no cases like the agents in @newworldafro's thread kept claiming. :francis:

My sister loves her work and became a medical professional to do exactly this but there is zero doubt this has been the toughest year of her professional life.
Yep. I cannot begin to imagine the toll that a year and a half of non stop extra hour shifts have put on heath are professionals.

Not to mention the uncertainty of constantly worrying you could be soon on a ventilator if you make the smallest mistake.

Sounds like a recipe for a traumatic stress disorder.
