my insomnia is bad as fukk tonight and ive been scrolling ebay. i thought this thread might be a better use of my time
this is personally my fav funkadelic LP along with Standing on the Verge of Getting it On (their best 2 imo but you cant really go wrong with either band)
cosmic slop holds a special place to me cos it happened to be in my record collection when i got dumped by a long term girlfriend for the first time ever. shyt was extremely depressing but listening to this album was pretty cathartic. im serious about the concept, ill break it down quickly song-by-song
every song link is embedded in the spoiler button so you can review the album as you go long, if you wish...
(EDIT: i added the full album in one video in a reply if you just wanna hear the whole thing with no commentary! i hate when motherfukkers on youtube show a video game run but yap over the whole thing. i wont do it to you either lol)
1 - nappy dugout
pretty much your standard intro song. its just there to set the scene. its a good groove, youve prolly heard it sampled a lil bit. i love the way the guitars and bass double. the baby crying is kinda weird but the song is about a big ol p*ssy so what do you expect?? moving on...
2 - you cant miss what you cant measure
i like this one. its a remake of their old song 'heart trouble' but they redid the music. its got a cool old school jackson 5 sound to it with the chorus vocals. they split the verse vocals, but p-funk legend ray davis gets a few lines. hes the legendary SUPER DEEP singer, he does the lead vocal on "into you" on one nation. the lyrics are tragic but funny; super depressing, but the music is so light hearted you cant take it too serious. love the way they flip the chorus at the end too
3 - march to the witch's castle
it gets real spooky here. heavy black sabbath vibe, george screws down his vocals over a really creepy soulful electric guitar-led instrumental. george does a rap about the horrors of vietnam, and what a young black soldier faced out there, and how his wife, thinking he was dead, remarried. he finds refuge in a needle. it gets a little close to being overblown, but theyre deadly serious. this is 1973... vietnam wasnt quite over yet. im surprised nobodys grabbed samples off this one tbh
4 - lets make it last
another rocker. it has a pretty interesting structure.. the verses slowly get more excited and the song explodes in the chorus. fukkin great drumming on this one. if jimi hendrix didnt overdose, he mighta went in a direction like this.
5 - cosmic slop
if you dont know this song, go slap yourself and come back. then go watch the live version from 1976 on youtube.. you'll know the thumbnail cos crazy ass garry shider is wearing a diaper on stage. dont let the theatrics fool you.. this is darkness. this whole album is love twisted. cosmic slop is sung from the perspective of a child watching his mother smile while seeming to provide for the family, but knowing his mom is selling her body for money. the chorus is sang from the devils perspective... 'would you like to dance with me, were doing the cosmic slop.' one of the best songs they (or anybody on the planet) ever wrote.
6 - no compute
a strange interlude song. george spits a story about rapping to a woman at a nightclub, eventually wearing her down to hookup, but upon lack of protection, settles for a BJ. they fall asleep together, and he wakes up, and compares her breath to a 1948 buick. and it gave the world the phrase "all looks are not alike: all holes are not a crack; when it doubt, vamp. or at least ad-lib."
i know it sounds stupid, but its a really good song. its so good, The Clash stole it, changed the lyrics, and called it "jimmy jazz"
7 - this broken heart
this ones kind of wild. it kind of reminds me of those short-lived 'psychedelic soul' fad in the late 60s. its pretty straightforward doo-wop, but the bridge and other sections get sort of an acid-rock remake, and george delivers a fantastic rap over the bridge. its a cool track.
8 - trash-a-go-go
heavy! its an acid rock nightmare of a courtroom scenario: the plaintiff (YOU!!!) has been accused of exploiting your lady for a payday... pimping. shameful. its sort of a mess, honestly. it's only a couple minutes long and works as a segue to the final track
9 - can't stand the strain
i like this one. it ties up the theme of the album well, and the break after the chorus reminds me of stevie wonder a lot. another curious thing is the guitar riff in the song. this song was released in 1973, but the song itself is older. the riff is kind of reminiscent of lynyrd skynyrd's 'sweet home alabama,' a song from their album 'second helping' in.... 1974. im not sayin its a bite but that is sorta weird.
anyway, that wraps up the album. did you listen along? have you heard it already? what do you think about it?
sorry for the long post, but the album really does mean a lot to me. it got overshadowed in history that year by Innervisions by stevie wonder, an admittedly better album, but i really enjoyed Cosmic Slop. it seemed to be the last gasp of doowop in georges music as well. george and the rest of the band were heavy into psychedelic drug use by this point so some of the sound/sonic sculptures they get on this album are crazy. i really cant say enough about it.
well let me stfu. thanks for reading i guess. if you dont like it, thats cool... you prolly listen to doodoo tho
