The Jordan rules were not a particularly complex scheme on defense. There was only so much the rules allowed a defense to do in the way of scheme and positioning. It was a very basic scheme that happened to have a catchy name. If Michael went one way, trap him on the baseline, and if he went the other, try to funnel him into a double team around the foul line while making a point to contest shots in the paint. In fact Michael played well enough to win all 3 years the bulls lost to the pistons. That wasn’t why Detroit won those 3 series. They won because the rest of the bulls roster didn’t play well enough. The bulls second leading scorer averaged 13, 12, and 16.6 points in the 3 matchups with Detroit from 1988-90.
