Also, without even having to do the math, the sun would have to be immense in order to keep earth within its gravitational pull at a consistant rate. without us getting closer or further from the sun at every slight change it undergoes.

In OP's speculative example of the sun being the size of a basketball (a small object) each part of it would instead be responsible for a huge portion of the gravitational pull.
This means if a millimeter sliver of a basketball sized sun were to be chipped off or naturally corrode, etc then earth (as well as the entire milky way) would float hundreds of thousands miles further from the sun, our 365 day rotation might be closer to 400 days, etc etc
