Crazy it shows in this article that asthmatics are actually unexpectedly less susceptible to serious illness than originally thought with Covid because we have significantly less ACE2 receptors in our lower respiratory tract that cause severe illness :ohhh:That along with inhaled corticosteroids provides a bit of a shield .

newsGP - Why are patients with asthma not at increased susceptibility to COVID-19?

Don’t mean we’re safe by no means but I’ll take it:yeshrug::ehh:

now that's interesting

The study that's based on is not very strong and barely includes much Delta statistics.

How do you explain what's happening in Israel right now?

The issue with Israeli data is there's rarely any context given.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/outl...srael-hospitalization-rates-simpsons-paradox/

Long story short, they have more hospitalized vaccinated people than you'd expect because :

1. Something like 80% of their population is vaccinated. If 100% of them were vaccinated....then 100% of the people in the hospital would be vaccinated.

Which seems problematic except....

2.
Vaccinated Israelis, like White Americans, are older as a group than unvaccinated Israelis. And that’s why they’re going to the hospital at a rate higher than you might naively hope. Among Israeli adults under 50, as of Aug. 15, 3.5 million were vaccinated and 1.1 million were not. That’s still a considerable number of vaccine holdouts. Among those 3.5 million vaccinated younger people, just 11 were hospitalized — about three per million. Meanwhile, of the unvaccinated in this age range, 43 were in the hospital, or 39 per million.

Agreed re: hospitalizations

But the graph in the Tweet above is referring to breakthrough cases. I think what Israel is showing is the infection/spread is continuing. Which is continuing to put elderly/compromised at risk. Although clearly being vaxed helps prevent serious illness

I think they're less than 80%. The Hasid population does not fukk with the vaccines.

Speaking of, there hasn't been an outbreak in that community in NY has there? I would expect them to get decimated but haven't heard anything about that.

I know but again, "there is more break through cases in Israel" is only half the story.

59% of people hospitalized with covid-19 in Israel are vaccinated.

Seems terrible, right?

Out of that number, 87% were 60+.

I realize you aren't talking specifically about hospitalizations but break through infections matter a hell of a lot less if they don't result in hospitalizations. Vaccine or not, unfortunately older people are more likely to be hit harder with delta.

Was 78% 12 or older as of the middle of last month:

I love seeing antivax people that I know use street cocaine talmbout, "I don't want a shot because I don't know what's in it."
:russ::mjlol:

This is the hilarious irony

I know a few hippy dippy types who are anti vax and yet spend the weekend taking copious amounts of street drugs.

One justified it by saying the drugs serve a purpose to him the vaccine doesn't.
