I don't understand why you are trying to give Trump the benefit of the doubt. at all. It's one thing if this was destroying the rest of the world. But several other countries have managed to get it under control.

Military leaders who were once in his corner have publicly denounced his incompetence. He's even broken away from his GOP senate in funding NIH and CDC, national health agencies. What bigger play is there?

What "bigger play" is there that needs to play out with the deaths of 130k+ Americans and the American economy falling off a cliff? It is as simple as "bad leadership"

Country had two choices until a vaccine come:

1. Effectively shut the entire country down except for some real essentials.

2. Power thru and hope a miracle occur. Hundreds of thousands will die but hopefully a vaccine will arrive.

Us on thecoli.com aren't smarter than the think tanks they have running analysis and scenarios. They ran the options down to a select few and gave Trump his orders. Told him get out there and get this country running.

The economic responsibilities of this country was chosen over lives. America shutting down for a real length of time would affect the world.

On top of that, the country so huge and spread out logistics for feeding cities and towns in an extended lock down would be a nightmare.

You have to remember we are dealing with a 70 year old manchild who only cares about himself and will do anything to stay in power...It's painfully clear he is pissed off at the virus not because its killing people, it's derailed his re-election campaign and put him behind the eight ball...His push to reopen the country has been entirely politically motivated, he cannot win re-election without the economy bouncing back...He has politicized masks, disregarded his own governments recommendations and continues to spew conspiracies and lies to reopen the economy...Re-opening schools has nothing to do with education, Rethuglicans view public schools as a state funded day care service...As he told his own voters, he loves the uneducated, he knows with their kids home a lot folk can't go back to work hence why he wants schools to open...He doesn't care if people die, he's flat out said he can shoot one of his supporters dead in the middle of the street and gain support...He knows his base has his back 100% and gutless Rethuglicans like Gym Jordan, Lady G and Lying Raphael toe the line...That's why he decided to take the gamble and reopen the country now increasing the spread of the virus knowing he has the safety net of postponing the election...Even if congress doesn't postpone election, the pandemic would still yield low voter turnout which Trump and Rethuglicans are entirely dependent on to have a chance in November...They have already come out fighting to block mail in voting, what kind of POTUS who wants an election to take place in November would do that?
