'Our backs are to the wall': Texas hospital to turn away COVID-19 patients with poor survival chances

A Texas hospital has formed an ethics committee to screen all COVID-19 patients for survival potential and send home those with low survival chances, according to Border Report.

Rio Grande City, Texas-based Starr County Memorial Hospital, implemented an ethics committee and a triage committee to review incoming COVID-19 patients, Starr County Health Authority Jose Vazquez, MD, said during a July 21 videoconference call. The committees will determine what type of treatment patients will likely require and whether they are likely to survive. Those deemed too fragile, sick or elderly will be advised to go home. Patients with low recovery chances will be better cared for at home with loved ones rather than dying at a hospital thousands of miles away, Dr. Vazquez said.

"There is nowhere to put these patients. The whole state of Texas and neighboring states have no ICU beds to spare for us," Dr. Vazquez said. The county of 61,000 residents has recorded 1,573 COVID-19 cases and 16 related deaths with 27 fatality cases pending, according to Border Report. As of July 22, 11,461 of 55,263 hospital beds are available statewide, with 1,088 ICU beds open. Currently, Texas has more COVID-19 patients hospitalized than any other state, with 10,848 COVID-19 patients as of July 22.

Physicians at Starr County Memorial Hospital, the only hospital in the county, have to make these end-of-life decisions because residents aren't following social distancing guidelines, Starr County Judge Eloy Vera said, adding, "Our backs are to the wall."

"The number of cases we see in the ER are growing every day; 50 percent of cases in the ER are COVID. The situation is desperate," Dr. Vazquez said. "We cannot continue functioning at Starr County Memorial Hospital the way things are going."

My county really wanted parents to sign "death waivers" if kids play sports.

I had my son read it because he wanted to play JV football while doing online school and he hit me with the :gucci:

We will be looking for some other extracurricular activities that can be done online.

ETA: they're not enforcing this anymore because of the blowback, but just to think that they wanted to in the first place...smh...they're really like "fukk dem kids"
:heh: inadvertently sent, my ass. Took that move straight from the President who made them fools sign waivers to attend his shytty rally.

Imagine 2 sisters. They all lived together for over 50 years. One got sick and the other drove her to the hospital. The other one got sick and drove herself to the same hospital. Her heart stopped and she was put on a critical list of treatments.

Now the first sister got better and they removed the tube. That same day, she was told by her doctor that her sister is now a patient and she was the only contact they could find. Her sister heart had stopped and she had to decide when to stop the aggressive care. She was taken to see her sister on her dying bed. She was sent to another facility and her sister went to the morgue the same day. This is what we dealing with. Oh also they are both Black.

Then you go outside and you see those young brehs in the pool and at the bar with no masks.

I feel like spitting in their food and slap the shyt out their dumb asses.

Guys keep taking your precautions. Do not give in. Wear your mask and wash your hands. Practice social distance.

Stay safe.

Also for all those guys that did not get my frustrations with @Rarely-Wrong Liggins it was because we all saw this coming a hundred miles away. We all did. However you still got people who deny science and wanna make it all political.

Prepare for the worst. We still cant gauge whats gonna happen in 2 months when the flu is back.

Also Miami is chilled now and not as hot.

So just get ready for the worst

So florida just reported 170 deaths today and its not even noon yet. Yesterday 140 reported deaths. Thats 310 dead, how exactly are these numbers reported? Cause the 170 count would probably stay that way all day judging from what i seen in the past on worldometers...i feel like theres way more deaths a day but desantis is probably trying to juke the stats to not make it look so bad

They're going to easily hit 500 a day by mid August...

Deaths start piling up when the hospitals are at full capacity and they been that way statewide for over two weeks now...

Florida is the new Italy but without a functional brain to shut the state down...

Crazy that Cali is likely about to pass New York by the end of this week and they have a quarter of the deaths that NY have. Makes me wonder if the virus just got weaker or if NY had more deaths from the older population or just lack of resources at that time. There's been a slight uptick in deaths lately tho overall in the country. Hopefully they can being those numbers back down.
If im not mistaken the strain out here was from europe and was deadlier.

Crazy how they were different strains. Wonder if all originated from Wuhan or if there were different areas or labs that it came from and how long it was circulating in Europe before the U.S. or others heard about it.
