The most contagious mutation always wins out in the end. For a short-term disease there's no natural reason for the most contagious mutation to be weaker - in fact for a coronavirus like this the mutation that results in the highest viral load will likely being the most contagious AND the most deadly, thus it gets the most spread.
Weaker viral mutations only win out when the virus is too deadly (so that people are dying so quick they don't have time to infect others) or if the mechanisms by which the virus kills and the virus spreads interfere with each other (which doesn't seem to be true for Covid).
