The dude went full Colonel Kurtz while he was residing off the grid in Belize for a number of years. Basically had his own small private militia made up of poor locals and was running the community with an iron fist until he was forced to flee over the murder charges.

From what I remember from the documentary, McAfee and his neighbor started beefing after McAfee accused him of poisoning his dogs, which escalated to someone sneaking into the dude's house one night and putting a bullet in the back of his head while he was sleeping. When the evidence started pointing to McAfee and his goons being involved, he blamed it on a conspiracy involving the Belize government and got the fukk out of there with one of the Latinas he was paying to shyt in his mouth. And if that wasn't enough fukkery he announced he was running for president almost right after like nothing ever happened
