You need credit in order to get a credit card?

Pretty much. However, I got my first credit card in college when they used to give cards out regardless to your ability to make payments. I don't know if they do that anymore.

Anyone can get a credit card. Simply get a secured card. You send them an amount like $500 for collateral and a processing fee. They will then give you a credit card with a limit of the amount you sent ($500). If you use the card reasonably and pay on time, you will establish a good credit rating.

If you decide to cancel the secured card they will return the collateral deposit ($500 in the this example) minus any outstanding balance.

In less than a year I've gotten back over $800 in credit card rewards for buying stuff I normally would have anyway. In all fairness about half of it was sign up bonuses but that's still me earning $400 in cash back in one calendar year just off spending. That kinda cash back can pay for a PS4.

I have the following cards
Blue Cash Preferred (6% on groceries capped at $6000 annually)
Chase Freedom (rotating 5%)
Discover It (rotating 5%)

between the Blue Cash and Freedom that's the majority of my cash back. I've only earned about $20 on that Discover It. It helps me that I didn't chicken out and get the Blue Cash Every Day instead of the Preferred. The Preferred has a $75 annual fee but earns twice as much in cash back. the Every Day caps out at $180 a year (for the 3%) and the Preferred at $360 so if you max out the Preferred and subtract the annual fee from the cash back you're still at $285 which is $100 more than the Every Day.

The truth is if you spend more than $3000 annually on groceries the Preferred will pay its own annual fee. It actually pays its own fee at $2750 because that pays you $165 which when you subtract the $75 annual fee you have $90 left over. If you spent $3000 you'd get that same $90 in cash back on the every day because it's at 3% instead of 6%. The Every Day card is pointless.

throwing another one out there that is in the Chase Freedom category is the Discoverer IT

another 5% category card, doesn't get the respect it deserve because not many people know Discover. Have great service, US based, and free credit scores monthly .
Discover also is the best normal card that gives you a monthly FICO score for free.

Keeping a good credit card in hand trumps money. If you are still using money then you're playing a losing game (unless you can't control your credit card spending).

American Express Blue Cash and few other types of AMEX - right now there's deals with this card that give you

$50 of Colehaan for spending $200

$500 off $2000 shopping at mont Blanc

random local deals taking $20 of $50.

You can really save money on places you would shop anyway.

there are some good ones, you should also look for ones with pin and chip technology if you're traveling abroad.

some of the better ones have fees though, but if you're a heavy spender you more than make up for the fees.

Barcalys Arrival
Chase Sapphire are two really good ones. The quicksilver is awesome too

After reading up on here, I ended up getting amex gold charge, chase freedom, and amex everyday. Already feasting off rewards plus sign up bonuses. :salute:

I have the discover It card, I love it. a lot of smaller buisnesses don't take it because of their fees, but the cash back is :ahh:

from October to January you got 5% cash back at online stores and dept stores. You know I racked up due to the holidays.

Plus I have one more month of 0% apr. Bout to pay off the remaining balance and be done with the card for a while :win:

I got about $100 in cash back sitting on my Discover IT right now. about $75 on my AMEX Blue Cash Preferred and like $20 on my Chase Freedom. I'm loving these cash back cards. My only issue is in Feb all the 0% interest rates expire on them.
