Creed III & Black Masculinity

One of the most anticipated films for 2023 released and it centered around the dimensions of brotherhood. Through the parallels of this journey we see both actors and characters face trials and tribulations within the world as actors and their retrospective characters in the world of Creed. Between both worlds we see both actors and their counterparts face themes such as bonds, forgiveness, guilt, family, masculinity and ultimately the black male image.

Michael Phillips: 'Creed III' is 'right on time,' says stars Michael B. Jordan and Jonathan Majors | Entertainment News | ArcaMax Publishing

As the audience followed Adonis Creed for 8 years, this will be the first time we uncover the various layers of Adonis in Creed III. Assisting with these layers is Jonathan Majors, who plays Damian Anderson, an older childhood friend of Adonis who illustrates to the audience their past, present and future. Similar to the bond their characters built, Michael B Jordan & Jonathan Majors’ bond is indistinguishable. Traversing through their press run, we see both men approached with questions regarding the idea masculinity, embrace and showing appreciation for one another.

During an interview with Ayesha Racoe on NPR, Majors responds to the topic of Masculinity:

“Masculinity is love, its balance, its strength, theres vunerablity and their awareness, acknowledgment of ignorance, a big part of it is kindness, use of power, gentleness, theres are masculine characteristics, its quite unmasculine to emasculate another man, It doesn’t matter how much you weigh or benchpress, its an energy”
– Jonathan Majors
He continues:

“I hear my brothers, we fight and claw for every inch of positive popularity, positive news, its not lost on me or this moment, because of the photos, ive made. I don’t want to shy away from black masculinity, I am a black man”
– Jonathan Majors
For black men, our masculinity is boxed into certain stereotypes, while other groups can just “Be”. Many dense individuals aren’t able to comprehend or digest an accomplished black man who doesn’t fit their mold of their internalized environment. Dysfunctional programming doesn’t assist the elevation of black men. We need all black men to step outside of the box and be uncomfortable.

As Michael B. Jordan approaches a different question, focusing on the curation of Adonis and Damian’s relationship, he uses anime as one of his references for this film.

Michael B. Jordan on How Naruto Inspired Creed 3's Fight Scenes

“Brotherhood, friendships, bonds, promises,” Jordan said. “…usually the outcast, or the one that is different, is the one that gets ousted by the community, you know, they talk shyt about them, all that stuff. But they don’t hold a grudge. They come back and they help save everybody from some type of peril.

– Michael B. Jordan
He continues:

“I think just being black and connecting with that feeling different, being an outcast in certain areas and still feeling like I can make a difference”
– Michael B. Jordan

On the inside of Creed lll, we see Michael B. Jordan’s growth as a director, playing the character for 8 years and using this experience to direct and bring others into his perspective. Previously directed by Ryan Cooglar and Steven Caple Jr, This is Michael B. Jordan’s directorial debut. But he isn’t left without alone, He mentions seeing Ryan Cooglar direct Fruitvale Station gave him the confidence to step into this new role.

“Seeing someone who looks like me, close to my age, a young black man shooting a feature film influenced me”
– Michael B. Jordan
He relays his advice from Cooglar:

“Theres no right time for this, You’ve been on set your entire life, When you find something that speaks for you just go for it”
– Michael B. Jordan

During this journey, this press run has highlighted celebratory moments for Michael B. Jordan, one of them includes receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame. Jonathan Majors and Ryan Cooglar also made appearances in commemorating this achievement, and recognizing his previous work in movies such as Fruitvale station, Black Panther, Just Mercy A Journal For Jordan, the Creed Franchises and more.

Was gonna make a thread to shout out all the MBJ threads last week because they worked.. Creed 3 had projections for $35mil going into the weekend and the numbers just kept going up. They blew projections out of the water close to $60 mil on a $75 mil budget in first week is great(highest in the franchise and highest debut for a sports movie ever).. Shout out to the AI chat bots too blowing his name up.. Marketing came thru crazy..

Majors had back to back #1 movies too, not sure how often thats been done but that should be noted also.. Great week for those brothers..

Anyone whose actually a fan of boxing will enjoy the little things this movie did compared to the first two.

They legit followed the blue print of promoting an actual boxing fight. They had legit boxing announcers, ring girls, and even DAZN on the ring.

MBJ brought a lot of cats on this movie.. Terrence Bud Crawford, Jose Benavidez, Stephen c00n A Smith, etc in this movie.

How the boxing was shot was way more realistic than the first two.

Being a young Black Millionaire beats clout and "edge" any day of the week...

But we can let the haters tell it...

Nah, I rather be some clout demon smashing top-notch hoodrats and have access to hood celebs rather than being in MBJ's position. :troll:

Only thing missing was a realistic storyline
