Probably just luck that something as tragic hasn't happened in baseball recently if you see some of the shots players have taken with those balls. Brandon McCarthy's injury in particular was a really scary one.

those balls seems harder then baseballs and they seem to throw it a lot closer to the hitter

Nah, you're trained to hit certain spots on the ground, but sometimes dudes go head hunting to intimidate the batsman. As the batsman you can duck or try to challenge the bowler like Hughes(R.I.P) attempted.

What makes it scary is all the different types of grounds, you have to be out there for a while to even judge how a ball will behave.

It's actually the complete opposite lol. Bowlers are very precise in their delivery, especially spin bowlers.
